Diego Costa has passed his Chelsea medical, ahead of a move to the English Premier League side.
The move which has been imminent for a long while now, is almost about to be complete as the Spanish striker has passed his medical with the London side, reports The Guardian. BBC have also confirmed the news.
Chelsea had not already completed the move because of Costa’sAi??hamstring injury, butAi??the Brazil-born attacker returned to training with Spain ahead of the World Cup and it seems that Chelsea are inches away from roping in the player within their ranks.Ai??The 25-year-old is set to become Jose Mourinho’s first summer signing. After the departure of Samuel Eto’o (after the Cameroonian’s one year stint with the club), it seems that Costa’s arrival might prove to be the end of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba’s Blue’s career. It seems plausible that Romelu Lukaku also departs from the club as the young Belgian wants regular game time, and despite his two spectacular seasons on loan at West Brom and Everton, he is not guaranteed that at Stamford Bridge.
Costa would arrive at Chelsea after a highly successful season with Atletico Madrid, where the Spaniard won the league and his side came incredibly and agonizingly close to winning the Champions League.Ai??The 25-year-old scored 27 goals in La Liga this season, his most productive campaign (Ai??previously, he had never scored more than 10 league goals in a season), and he was equally impressive in the other cup competitions, notably scoring eight goals in nine appearances in the Champions League. He also scored the penalty which put the Spanish side 2-1 up at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League semi-final.
Chelsea visibly needed an effective striker last season and could have ended up with silverware had they had a prolific one, coming so close without a devastating forward. Costa would be imperative in Mourinho’s title challenge next season as the Portuguese boss looks to add trophies to his cabinet in his second spell in charge of the club.
Meanwhile, Chelsea also have their eyes set on Atletico full back Filipe Luis and midfielder and ex-Chelsea man Tiago as they need to replace departing veterans Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard. Tiago will be able to join his old side on a free transfer.
AtlAi??tico have agreed a deal to sign the 19-year-old forward Angel Correa from San Lorenzo who is very highly rated both worldwide. However, the Spanish side need a more experienced name upfront, to replace Costa as well as David Villa, who left for newly established American side New York City. Fernando Torres, the ex-Atletico man and a fan favorite is tipped to make a move back to the club. Diego Simeone, Torres’s teammate at the time, believes that the Spaniard still has a lot of football left in him and is considered to be plotting a move for the player.
