We look at some of the Premier League action from the weekend as we now head into the international break for two weeks.
David de Gea turns Manchester United Savior
Manchester United go into the international break fourth in the league, a spot they’ll gladly take once the league finishes (especially after the rocky start). With a hard fought 2-1 win over Merseyside club Everton, the Red Devils now have 11 points to their name and Radamel Falcao finally has a goal. The on-loan Monaco striker scored his first goal in the EPL and has immediately made statements saying he wants to stay at the club for ‘many many years’. However, Roberto Martinez had a problem with his goal- the fact that it stood at all. Steven Pienar went down with an injury and the referee refused to stop play. Immediately the Colombian scored. Martinez said after the game, ai???Steven Pienaar was on the ground, we made it clear to the referee to stop the game and he allowed it to play on and it was very, very disappointing.Ai??Steven receives a knock and he goes to ground, the ball is in front of him and the referee is well aware of it. He is talking with fourth official.Ai??It is a clear-cut decision. The law says if the player is on the ground and the ball is not in a dangerous position you need to stop the game.Ai??Man United attacks and the ball ends up in our net and I donai??i??t think that is fair. I think that action was a big mistake from the referee.ai???
While the winner was obviously debatable, Roberto Martinez should have a problem with his players for not getting anything out of the game. Leighton Baines had the chance to get his side level and had his penalty saved gloriously by David de Gea, which turned out to be why United walked out of the game with three points in the first place as the English full-back made up for his error by supplying Naismith for the eventual equalizer.
Everton now find themselves in a highly astonishing and worrying 17th place with six points. The Toffees only have one win to boast and even though it is very early in the season, Martinez has to ensure his side get back to winning ways after the international break.
Liverpool get hard earned three points
The Red half of Merseyside did end the game with three points, that too after a month- their last win in the Premier League came on 31st August. It was a struggled victory, something Liverpool fans have become used to, but it gave a sense of respite, relief and hope.
Adam Lallana scored his first game for Liverpool and it was a goal to cherish (indicated by his celebration). Right at the end of the first half, Lallana cleverly made his way in the West Brom box (defeating the opposition defenders with his tricky feet), and played a short pass to Jordan Henderson, who quickly passed it back to Lallana. The ex-Saints skipper made no mistake and put the ball past Foster.
The second half began with Anfield roaring but Liverpool’s lead was not to last as Dejan LovrenAi??fouled Saido Berahino, but it was right outside the box and the linesman (and the referee) were in a good position to spot it. However, he pointed to the spot and Berahino had no problems sending it past Mignolet and the Baggies got the goal they deserved. There was gloom for the Liverpool fans who could sense a draw on the cards, but eventually it was not to be. A goal from their vice-captain got them the lead and they ended the game with full points.
What was especially delightful to see was Steven Gerrard playing his old attacking role. And the skipper did so in style. In the last 20 minutes, we saw plenty of Gerrard in the final third- a clever one-two with substitute Mario Balotelli, another back heel to the Italian from the right flank and a shot from outside of the box which went in the hands of the goalkeeper.
Liverpool got the much needed three points. They go into the international break in the ninth spot, level on points (10) with seventh placed West Ham. The Reds will be boosted with the return of Daniel Sturridge and Joe Allen after this break and have to kick start their season from there on. This should have been treated as a harsh wake up call. If Liverpool want to end the season in the top 4 places, Rodgers needs to regroup the side, come up with a plan and start acting on it.
Chelsea win over Arsenal sends another message where the trophy will be going…and probably by March
The biggest game of the weekend was when Chelsea took on Arsenal. All the pre-match headlines were centered around Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, and astonishingly enough, the duo managed to keep the limelight after the game as well. An incident in the technical area between the two managers illustrated the rivalry the two share as there was shoving and tie-pulling.Ai??As in the previous 11 meetings between Wengerai??i??s Arsenal and Mourinhoai??i??s Chelsea, in which the Frenchman has failed to register a single win to change his ‘Specialist in Failure’ status (in front of his counterpart), the game had a similar outcome.
The Blues won the game 2-0. Eden Hazard scored from the spot and Cesc Fabregas (ouch) set up Diego Costa (surprise surprise) for Chelsea’s second. Chelsea continue their unbeaten streak on top of the table and are now four place ahead of second placed Manchester City. The game gave another demonstration of where the trophy is headed this season, and if the rival teams don’t step up their game, it might be all too easy for Mourinho’s Chelsea.
Arsenal are in the eight place, level on points with Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa. Looks like Wenger will have to wait for the return fixture to finally change Mourinho’s unbeaten record.
Pochettino’s Tottenham win over former side Southampton
An encounter where Mauricio Pochettino was everyone’s headline awaited everyone at White Hart Lane as the Argentine took on his former side Southampton in the Premier League. A question that was raised before the game was whether Pocho’s contribution at Southampton was overstated as Koeman seemed to be doing incredibly well with the club and went into this game in the second spot. Well, apparently not. Spurs ended up knicking the game as a Christian Eriksen goal was enough to fetch them three points..
Both the teams worked their socks off in the game, and failed to create any real chances. There was competition, but it was so evenly matched that it was quite boring and dull. Six minutes before half-time, Eriksen made a trademark swift move, and put the ball in the net. Southampton should have gone back with a point butAi??Saido Mane somehow managed to miss from close range right at the end of the game. Pochettino, much like Rodgers, was desperately in need of a win and got it after four Premier League matches without one. Spurs are now in the sixth place with 11 points and they too, need to really kick-start their season after this break.
