Amidst the “romance” of the FA Cup, Saturday offered up a pretty eventual set of 5 Barclays Premier League fixtures – including a high-profile London Derby. Here’s a look at what happened.
The elimination of many high profile Premier League teams from the FA Cup before March meant that the quarterfinals of English football’s oldest tournament were played in the same weekend as 5 Barclays Premier League fixtures. The presence of a London Derby between Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur meant that enough attention was focused on the league this weekend, as every one of the 5 games on Saturday had something at stake in the race towards the title, or towards safety (besides three points, of course).
‘Old Man’ Eto’o helps “The Pensioners” to a handsome win over Spurs
Is he 32, 35 or 39 years old? It sure didn’t matter when a “key pass” by Jan Verthongen provided Samuel Eto’o the opportunity to showcase the reflexes of a man at least 10 years younger to put Chelsea in front in the 56th minute of what was, until then, a scrappy London Derby – not a bad effort for someone who was never meant to be in the starting lineup in the first place.
While the goal was not spectacular by any means, the turn of pace that the Cameroonian showed at the corner flag in celebrating the goal is something that will be talked about for years to come.
Interesting team selections
In complete contrast to the ‘faith’ in Martin Jol shown by Fulham owner Shahid Khan at the start of the season, Felix Magath is now the Cottagers third manager this season. The German has been brought in for his experience in his home league, and faced with a must-win game at South Wales, he decided to throw former Olympiakos striker Kostas Mitroglou up front for his first start for Fulham, despite the striker having tweaked his hamstring on international duty. The man known for being a fitness freak sprung another surprise by throwing young centre forward Cauley Woodrow as a partner for a Greek international.
The selection was an odd one from the start and didn’t look like it would work at all. Putting two men up front requires both of them to have a good understanding with each other; but Woodrow and Mitroglou unsurprisingly looked like they met on the pitch for the first time.
Meanwhile, at the time of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Stamford Bridge, Spurs boasted of the best away record in the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League. It was evident, however, even before the start, that Tim Sherwood was setting up his team ‘not to lose’ to Chelsea rather than to win. What Spurs supporters saw was their best centre half play at left back and their best right back playing as a right winger, with none of their A?100 million worth of summer signings making it to the starting lineup.
The sight of Kyle Walker playing ahead of namesake Kyle Naughton on Tottenham’s right flank is not the most inspiring, but Eden Hazard’s sterling run of form meant that one can see a method to this madness. Aaron Lennon’s deployment as a No 10 looked more of a decision to throw off Chelsea and Jose Mourinho, despite the presence of Gylfi Sigurdsson in the eleven. Out of all of the summer signings under AVB, only Paulinho made an appearance in this fixture.
Did Sherwood’s plan to nullify Eden Hazard by having Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton double team up on him work? Well, Eden Hazard simply switched sides.
Tim Sherwood and Felix Magath slam players
Ever since taking over as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Tim Sherwood has been lauded for “putting an arm around” Emmanuel Adebayor and for getting the best of the players he inherited – in short, because he was not Andre Villas-Boas. The captain of the Blackburn Rovers’ title-winning squad was right in pointing out that one can’t legislate for some dreadful individual errors on the part of Spurs’ defenders (Jan Verthongen’s ‘assist’, Kyle Walker’s inexplicable header putting Demba Ba through on goal). In the context of his work thus far as manager, however, the former Sherwood’s post match comments were particularly surprising.
“You can’t legislate for the capitulation.”
“You just can’t have that. It’s a lack of characters, too many of them [being]too nice to each other, and you need to show a bit more guts and not want to be someone’s mate all the time. They need to drag it out of each other. It hurts me and I won’t forget about this when we hit the motorway, but some might.”
Given the lack of time that was afforded to Andre Villas-Boas, venting his frustration concerning the players in a post match interview is not going to help his case in retaining the job full-time. He is not the first manager to slam his players in the press, but others lost their jobs in doing so. Glenn Hoddle, another man hoping to manage Spurs, took the opportunity to slam Sherwood’s actions, saying:
“I agree he was very honest but personally that’s something you say in the dressing room to the players. You might come out and disguise what your feelings are.
Felix Magath, in comparison, did not come across as harsh as Tim Sherwood, as he too commented on some of players not being used to a relegation fight – targeting in particular, Kostas Mitroglou, who he believes is experiencing a ‘culture shock’:
“Mitroglou is a player who is not used to a relegation fight,” said the German.
“He comes from the best club in Greece, who was better than every other in their league, so he is only used to scoring. That is his strength.
Going by his selection of the Greek international and a young, inexperienced centre forward in favour a relatively in-form Darren Bent is a compelling enough argument for the German experiencing a culture shock himself.
