David Beckham has urged Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard to continue as England skipper.
England returned from the World Cup a disappointed side as they failed to even get past the group stages. England started off the campaign by losing to Italy 2-1. They had a good game against the three time World Champions, but didnai??i??t do anything to look like they deserved to come back with a win. Their next game was a must win tie against Uruguay. This game had Luis Suarez returning for the South Americans and the half-fit ex-Liverpool player scored two goals to knock England out of the tournament. The third game against Costa Rica was just a formality and ended in a stalemate.
Roy Hodgsonai??i??s side looked lacklustre and uninspired for all three games and failed to weave any magic on the field. Steven Gerrard received a lot of criticism as he failed to deliver for his national team after having a great season with Liverpool. Gerrardai??i??s international career has since come into the fore and may people have claimed that the player should/would retire after a disappointing campaign.
David Beckham, however, has urged Gerrard to remain as England captain. He feels that the entire side failed and the main blame went to the 34 year old because he was the captain and held the responsibility of the team performing.
“I think it would be great if Steven continues because it was a disappointing tournament for the whole team and the captain kind of takes the real kind of brunt of thingsai???, said the former England captain
“But as a captain you feel a certain responsibility to lift the team. Stevie has done that for many years for Liverpool and for England. He has always been a real motivator, the way he plays and his passion that he shows on the pitchai???
The England team is a relatively young one and only had a few veterans in the team as Roy Hodgson chose to include young faces in the side. Beckham feels that Gerrard should remain part of the team because he is a leader and the young players would benefit from his captaincy, as he would prove to be a good mentor for the team.
“I would love to see Stevie continue because I think these young players need someone to look up to and a mentor – someone that has been there and done it – and I think that Steve is a great captain. He has been for Liverpool and England.
“He doesn’t need my advice but one thing that I would say; that if you can play for England as long as you can, then do it.”
