After a rather tumultuous pre-season for the Nerazzurri, Walter Mazzarri will be looking to get things back on track as InterAi??kick on their season later this week. TheHardTackle previews the road that lies ahead for the giants from Milan.
For Inter, the summer of 2013 has been yet another case of chopping and changing. Massimo Moratti’s policy of non-tolerance towards failure has resulted in the appointment of yet another manager; this time, the man under the microscope being the enigmatic Walter Mazzarri. The Italian tactician left Naples after completing the last season and took on the mantle of steadying the troubled ship at the blue half of the San Siro. And he arrives with a reputation of reviving falling institutions. Whether he weaves his wand again remains to be seen.
Casting an eye on the squad, Marco Branca and his team have done a commendable job in removing some of the dead-wood and bringing in a host of promising young talent which render a new lease of enthusiasm and fresh perspective to an ageing group. The financial clout continues to tighten its grip around the club due to which (unlike previous seasons) the Nerazzurri have practiced prudence in their spending policy, and resorted to the adage of ‘making superstars’ rather than buying them. Surely, this must be unfamiliar territory for the free-spending and free-sacking Moratti!

The pre-season campaign was a largely a disappointing one for the team. Having said that, one would not even Ai??have expected Mazzarri to hit the ground running, as the new players will demand their fair share of time to bed into a new culture and the intricate details of the manager’s preferred systems. Though Inter managed to dispatch some of the smaller names, they were well and truly over-run by the big name players of Chelsea and Real Madrid. Perhaps, the drubbing against a weakened Los CheAi??came as a shocker, and was undoubtedly the nadir of the tour.
Positives from the Pre-Season
Ishak Belfodil, the summer recruit from Parma has finally shown signs of living upto his immense billing. A physically imposing forward who excels in bringing others into play by holding on to the ball, Belfodil also likes to isolate his marker in 1 v 1 situations. Comparisons to former team-mate Karim Benzema have been inevitable, given the path the Algerian has traced but it remains to be seen whether he can control his temperament and put his talent into practice.
Squad Analysis
Goalkeepers (Samir Handanovic, Juan Pablo Carrizo)
One of the areas where the Nerazzurri have ample quality is between the sticks. Samir Handanovic has made the No 1 Jersey his own since his arrival from Udinese last summer, and has shown quite a few instances of his sharp reactions and handling as a custodian. It is improbable that there would be any further additions in this department.
Defenders
Center Backs (Hugo Campagnaro, Rolando, Andrea Ranocchia, Juan, Christian Chivu, Marc Andreolli)
The arrivals of Rolando and Hugo Campagnaro from Porto and Napoli respectively have added some much needed quality and depth to a faltering back-line, one which conceded an astounding 1.5 goals/game last season under the stewardship of Andrea Stramaccioni. Ai??With the perfect mixture of ball-players and no-nonsense stoppers, the addition of a new center-back remains an unlikely prospect.
Wing Backs ( Javier Zanetti, Ezequiel Schelotto, Wallace, Jonathan, Yuto Nagatomo, Alvaro Pereira)
With a long term injury to Javier Zanetti, Ezequiel Schelotto and Jonathan are expected to share the right flank between themselves, with Wallace (brought on Loan from Chelsea) expected to be the back-up option. On the opposite side, Yuto Nagatomo and Alvaro Pereira will fight it out for a place in the XI. The departure of Jonathan cannot be ruled out, as the club looks to free the wage budget to make room for new signings.
Midfielders
Central Midfielders (Matteo Kovacic,Ai??Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Esteban Cambiasso, Freddy Guarin, Ruben Botta, Ricardo Alvarez)
According to reports, the club has been working on a couple of deals to strengthen the midfield. Talks to bring in Bologna midfielder Saphir Taider to the San Siro are reportedly nearing completion, and a direct swap between Kuzmanovic and Milan’ Antonio Nocerino is also well and truly on the cards. With three spots to fill in central midfield, the Nerazzurri require strength in depth, and that is exactly what the arrival of Nocerino and Taider will provide.
Strikers : (Mauro Icardi, Ishak Belfodil, Diego Milito, Rodrigo Palacio)
The addition of Mauro Icardi and Ishak Belfodil have added the much needed quotient of goals to the Inter forward line, the lack of which was evident particularly in the post winter season. A mere 55 goals during the campaign represented a telling fallacy for the club, adding to its long list of miseries in one of its most horrific seasons ever. Both the new recruits bring something different to the table; while Belfodil is a physically imposing center-forward, Icardi is aAi??player whose movement and finishing have drawn comparisons with some of the great Number 9’s of the past.Ai??With the two, the attack now looks a much better prospect on paper. Diego Milito and Rodrigo Palacio, both of whom had decent campaigns will have increased competition from the new arrivals for the contention of a starting place in the XI.
The likely XI
Having broken down the individual departments, it is now time to cast an eye on the macro level ai??i?? the system as a whole. WalterAi??Mazzarriai??i??s teams have always been set up to play on the counter attack. In Europe, Napoli averaged a mere 36% possession on the ball, almost half of what Barcelonaai??i??s figure was. The team defended deep, thereby not allowing the opposition to break through on goal and rely on exploiting the spaces left by them when attacking. One could expect much of the same at Inter ai??i?? the backline defending deep, with Cambiasso sitting just in front of them, cutting off any potent supply to the opposition striker, with able support from Guarin and Kovacic (if needed.)
Juan Jesus, given his ability on the ball, would most likely carry the ball out of defense and initiate the attacking moves. Cambiasso will probably hold ground and stop any lingering chances of a swift counter. Freddy Guarin will play the box to box role, and Kovacic will play as an advanced play-maker. The midfield will remain compact and keep things tight in the middle. Belfodil is expected to play off the striker and link up the midfield and attack with his ability of holding on to the ball and bringing others into play. A characteristic feature of Mazzarri’s systems are the expansive attacking policy of his teams, and the wing-backs will look to make the pitch as wide as possible by providing an attacking outlet down the flanks.
Expectations
After a string of utterly disappointing campaigns, Inter are in much need of consolidation. A promising start is a deceptive reflection of success, one has to just rewind his memories back to last season itself, when the flying start ultimately had its wings chopped off due to the excessive weight of unreasonable expectations from both the manager and players. Inter currently do not possess the adequate quality to win the scudetto, and especially with the likes of Juventus, Napoli and Fiorentina improving upon an already comparatively better squad, a championship remains nothing more than a far-fetched dream.
On the flipside of league inferiority, rests the ray of hope in the Coppa Italia. The squad is expected to be well-stacked in all departments come September 2nd, and that could prove vital in Mazzari’s quest of a trophy after 2 barren seasons.
