Chelsea defender Ashley Cole admitted he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge for one more year.
The Englishman, who joined Chelsea from London rivals Arsenal in 2007 has a current deal that expires at the end of the season and would like to renew it if it were up to him. The 32 year old has expressed his desire to end his club career at Chelsea.
Cole had signed a one year contract in January and he would be willing to sign a contract extension for next season. The left back said:
“I signed an extension at the start of the year and so have this year left,” Cole told The Sun.
“However, that will be up at the end of the season.
“I hope to stay for longer.
“I have had a great time here, a great career here and, of course, I’d love to stay if they still want me.
“There is going to be a time when they will have to replace me.
“I have Ryan Bertrand in my place and one day I’m going to want to watch him play, so the time will come when I will finish my career.”
With Ryan Bertrand waiting in the wings, Mourinho must be confident he has a player who can take over the mantle from Ashley Cole. Cole has been one of the best left backs in world football over his Chelsea career and has performed at a consistent level over the last decade. Mourinho, who was much criticized for tapping up Cole when he was an Arsenal player in 2005, will want to extend Coleai??i??s stay at Chelsea. The left backai??i??s powers may have waned over the years but Cole remains an integral part of Jose Mourinhoai??i??s playing eleven.
If Cole were to leave, Mourinho could look at bringing Fabio Coentrao in at Chelsea, the two having worked together during Mourinhoai??i??s days at Real Madrid. Coentrao would certainly look forward to playing in a team where his position in the starting line-up would be undisputed, given Bertrandai??i??s relative inexperience at the highest level. Coentrao would seem to be happy with the switch that re-unites him with his fellow Portuguese manager.
