The former England manager has denied speculations about him replacing Rafa Benitez at Chelsea.
The rumour mills went hay-wire after Rafa Benitezai??i??s recent outburst in press about the Chelsea fans and the management. Benitez expressed his frustration against the fans and urged them to support the team instead of creating a negative atmosphere at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool manager also questioned the clubai??i??s need behind naming him the ai???interimai??i?? manager and revealed that he will leave at the end of the current season.
The above comments fuelled speculations that Benitez could be sacked even before the season ends and will be replaced by another ai???interimai??i?? manager. Report Italian media suggested that current manager of Russian national team, Fabio Capello, is set to replace the Spaniard at Stamford Bridge till the end of this season.
But the 66-year-old has denied receiving any offer from Chelsea and has stated his happiness at being in Russia.
“I have not received an offer. I am thinking about the Russian national team, and I feel very happy in Moscow.” ai??i?? Capello said in an interview to an Italian Radio channel.
The rumours about Capello, echoed those regarding former manager of Russian national side, Guus Hiddink, when he was appointed as the interim manager in the 2008-09 season at Chelsea after Luiz Felipe Scholari was sacked in February. Incidentally, Hiddink has also been linked with a return to Stamford Bridge at the end of this season, despite his big contract with Russian giants Anzhi Makhachkala.
But as of now it seems unlikely that Roman Abramovich will sack Benitez at this point of the season. Chelseaai??i??s current aim in the league is to qualify for the Champions League and the Spaniard is well in track of achieving that. They are also in contention of winning the Europa League and the FA Cup ai??i?? silverware might go a long way into pacifying his relation with the Chelsea fans.
