Reports in England suggest that Chelsea FC will make a move in January to try and sign Real MadridAi??midfielder Xabi Alonso for free next season.
The 31-year-old midfielderai??i??s future has remained under speculation since last summer. Xabi Alonsoai??i?? current contract expires in 2014 and it seems unlikely that he will sign a contract extension with the Spanish club. The midfielder has been an integral part of the Real Madrid squad since joining them back in 2009, but injuries has kept him out of the side this season. The Spanish club have signed Asier Illarramendi this season and the youngster has already made an impact in the side, and could grab a permanent berth in the starting eleven in the holding midfielder role, with Luka Modric playing as a deep-lying playmaker. Real Madrid are also reportedly lining up a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Illkay Gundogan next season to replace Alonso.
Alonso has been earlier linked with a move back to Liverpool next season, while Juventus are also monitoring his contractual situation. The Italian club are believed to looking at Alonso to replace Pirlo in their midfield next season. But recent reports from England suggest that Chelsea have joined the race for his signature and will open talks with him in January in order to sign him for free next season.
Jose Mourinho, who worked with Alonso during his time at the Spanish club, is a big fan of the midfielder and sees him as a good addition to the squad. With Lampard heading towards the fag end of his career and Mikel yet to bring consistency in his game, Alonso could provide Chelsea with the solidarity and control in the midfield.
Alonso has also spoken highly about Mourinho after his departure from the club at the end of last season. With a host of clubs expected to be interested in attaining his service, Chelsea are looking to open talks in January and are reportedly willing to offer him a three year contract.
