Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has made strong hints about his desire to play for Monaco once his contract expires, next season.
Blaugrana keeper Victor Valdes has given a very direct hint that he wants to leave Barcelona and join former teammate Eric Abidal in the French Ligue 1. Abidal plays for recently promoted side Monaco who are now big spenders of French football after being bought by Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev. Monaco are also thought to be interested in signing the Barcelona shot stopper whose current contract expires at the end of the season.
Valdes has often been looked at as the weak link in the Barcelona team, at times being at fault for conceding too many easy goals. He has so far rejected any talks from Barcelona officials in relation to extending his contract at Camp Nou. Many big European clubs are thought to be interested in acquiring his services, more so because Valdes could be snapped up for free at the end of the season since he hasnai??i??t signed a contract extension.
Valdes recently dropped his strongest hint yet that he wants to try out a new challenge. Perhaps he wants one last big pay package as the 31 year old nears the twilight of his career. Monaco are said to offer a lucrative deal to their big summer signings and with Monaco ridiculous tax rules, Valdes could really clean out the house with huge earnings.
The Blaugrana keeper said:
“Ligue 1 attracts me a lot – Monaco or elsewhere in France,” Valdes told Telefoot.
“This is one of my options. [My future] is in the hands of my representatives. But Monaco is a good option.
“I know that Abidal is very happy at Monaco and I am good friends with him. I consider him a brother.
“He is an example as a human being. To go back and play at his side again could be very special.”
Valdes has made over 500 appearances for Barcelona and has won six La Liga crowns and three Champions League trophies. But, with little else to win in Spain, Valdes is thought to move on once his contract expires on a free.
“I have a contract until the end of the season,” added Valdes.
“I spent over 20 years at the club. I had the chance to win everything, but now my adventure at the club ends. It is time for me to find new goals and find a new destination.”
