Arsenal have an away and a home game left for this year and they would want to start the new year on a high,first making sure they wrap up full points at the DW Stadium. After a fantastic performance in their last league game at Reading, Arsenal look to bring some consistency this season, something that has been completely missing. An early Saturday kick-off means the players get only five days of rest, but the good news is that almost the entire squad that played at Reading is available.
The job of Roberto Martinez doesn’t get any easier as they lie in 18th place in the league, having been in very poor form of late. The Latics host a resurgent Arsenal side but know very well that they can punish the Gunners if they can frustrate them and hit them on the counter. Last weekend they lost to a high flying Norwich City side, they will look to make amends this weekend.

Arsenal loanee Ryo Miyachi, Albert Crusat and Ben Watson are among the players who are out injured as part of the long-term injury list. From the last game, James McCarthy suffered an ankle injury, which means David Jones is the man quite likely to replace the Republic of Ireland international. Adrian Lopez, the center-back, is the biggest loss for manager Martinez; he is out with a hamstring tear and won’t be returning any time soon.
After earning just one point from the last four games, the Latics have slipped into the relegation zone. It is almost a habitual fight for them every season to avoid the drop. This time it gets even tougher with newly promoted teams doing exceptionally well. Roberto Martinez uses the most unique 3-4-3 formation, the only man to do that in the league, though Manchester City’s Mancini did try it once too this season. The team plays very decent possession football, and are well capable of hurting the Gunners on the break. In fact, if Wigan take an early lead, they are quite happy to sit back and defend with five defenders and make life very difficult for the Gunners – Manchester United can be asked to testify on the same!
In front of home support, Wigan averages 58% of possession, so they are quite likely to hold on to the ball a lot but against the Gunners it might be a different ball-game altogether. Ai??The danger that Wigan provide is from the flanks, the front three quite mobile and direct – Jordi Gomez and Aroune Kone both drift inside to try scoring goals. It is a fantastic prospect ahead of us at the DW.

Abou Diaby is the only long term injury absentee. Andre Santos at Left Full Back is yet to recover from a stomach muscle problem. The rest of the squad looks fit and Arsene Wenger is spoilt for choices, at least in the middle of the park.
Santi Cazorla, the third Spanish player to score a hattrick in English soil, is the toast of the town. He has formed a phenomenal partnership with country-mate Mikel Arteta and Englishman Jack Wilshere. The three can dictate terms in the midfield and make life miserable for Wigan. On the flanks, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Podolski were quite fantastic in the last game, the German providing the assists and the young Englishman coming back to form finally. The big decision for Arsene will be – if he wants to bring in Giroud as the lone striker and push Theo Walcott to the wings. This would mean no starting place for Oxlade-Chamberlain even after his best performance in an Arsenal jersey this season.
The Back Four will remain the same, but needs to concentrate more on not making silly mistakes. A lapse of concentration, a wrong pass, a silly slip – have been reasons for goals Arsenal have conceded this season, even though they are the third best team defensively this time around. Szczesny stands in front of the posts – a very towering figure who brings in poise and assurance at the back.
