The Full Members Cup came into existence in the aftermath of the Heysel tragedy, which culminated in a ban in Europe for English clubs. The resultant vacuum in the fixture list had to be filled in and therefore the competition remained in existence for seven years. It was also known under its sponsored names of the Simod Cup from 1987 to 1989 and the Zenith Data Systems Cup from 1989 to 1992.
Chelsea can boast of a strong history with the now defunct competition as they won it twice; only Nottingham Forest matched Chelseaai??i??s record for winning the cup. Crystal Palace won it once, while Blackburn and Reading were the only second division teams to win it in seven seasons.
The first ever final of the Full Members Cup took place at the old Wembley between Chelsea and Manchester City on the 23rd of March 1986. As if to further emphasize the oddity of the competition, both teams went on to the pitch wearing away kits. Chelsea wore their White kits while the Manchester City team came out in the famous Red and Black kits that they wore away from home, even as recently as last season.
Chelsea were just four points behind league leaders Everton at the time with games in hand while City were mid table. Needless to say, that the onus was upon manager John Hollinsai??i?? Chelsea to win the trophy. However calamity struck in the 10th minute when City took the lead through their No.9, Steve Kinsey. Chelsea were forced to respond and respond they did in the 24th minute when David Speedie headed in a peach of a cross from the left flank to put Chelsea level at 1 ai??i?? 1. Carrying on the good work, the Stamford Bridge team then scored the second goal through Colin Lee in the 36th minute. Lee had played most of the season as a full back but was restored to his original position of striker for this game.
Chelsea then scored a third and a fourth goal in a space of just eight minutes. They came courtesy of David Speedie who scored his second in the 52nd minute and the third in the 60th. That hat-trick by the Chelsea striker was the first hat-trick at Wembley in twenty years since Geoff Hurst scored three in 1966. To cap a ai???five starai??i?? performance, Chelsea scored the fifth goal in the 80th minute through a wonderfully taken shot from outside the box by Colin Lee, who ended up with a brace.
With 10 minutes to go, one wouldai??i??ve thought that the final was done and dusted, but those playing in the Red and Black kits of Manchester City had other ideas. Mick McCarthy scored Cityai??i??s second goal to make it 5 ai??i?? 2 in the 84th minute, and there was to be a third. Paul Simpson had come on for City to add firepower to the frontline, finding himself on the inside of the left touchline, he danced his way past two Chelsea defenders and put in a sumptuous cross behind the defensive line. Chelsea defender Doug Rougvie had no option but to head it and he ended up putting the ball into his own net. 86th minute and the game was placed at 5 ai??i?? 3.
The Chelsea faithful, sitting still under the comfort of a two goal cushion were soon to feel the cold ground beneath their derrieres. As City pressurized the Chelsea backline, Andy May made a clever run behind the Chelsea defence and found himself one on one with the keeper after the ball was passed to him. As fate would have it, he was tackled from behind and the referee made no hesitation in awarding a penalty to Manchester City in the 89th minute. It was duly converted by Mark Lillis.
The cup however ended up going Chelseaai??i??s way as they held on to the slender lead in the final moments of the game. The final was also poorly planned as Manchester City had played a derby against fierce crosstown rivals Manchester United just a day before, while Chelsea had to play a game as well. Post the final, Chelsea endured a miserable run of games during the Easter period which all but ended their hopes of a title and fingers were pointed at the exhaustion, two games in two days had had upon their squad.
