Reports suggest that Mr. Savio Madeira is tipped to be the favourite to take over the throne, getting his due promotion this time around.
Savio served his tenure as Assistant Coach under Bob Houghton and more recently under Armando Colaco.Ai??The Goans has been pretty successful at his stint so far, mentoring India inAi??Asia CupAi??after an absenteeism of 27 years. Bob Houghton was shown the door immediatly after the coveted continental cup, and Dempo head coach took over the helm for Indian lads.
Controversially, he was also accused of scouting and persuading many players to join Dempo SC while touring with the Indian team. Hence, this led to the recent hype regarding Armando Colaco refusing to sign a meager one-year contract offered by AIFF.Ai??Many names popped up amidstAi??speculationsAi??Ai??regarding who would be the perfect one for the top job, which isnai??i??t a walk in the park by any standards.
The job was initially offered on a platter to the veteran Moroccan coach, Karim Bencharifa who guided his current club Salgaocar SC to a coveted domestic double this year. He alarmingly refused to come to AIFFai??i??s aid for the cause, and led to a handful of controversy after club owner Shivanand Salgaocar openly refused to release Mr. Bencharifa. He still has a year left in his contract to serve the Goan club, which has been improving leaps and bounds since his arrival.
The second most likely contender to take the job was another tried and tested personnel in Mr. Sukhwinder Singh ai???sukhiai??i??. He is currently the technical director for Pailan Arrows and was highly tipped for the job. But Sukhi sadly doesnai??i??t possess an AFC ai???Aai??i?? license, which is a pre-requisite to get the responsibility of the Indian national football teamai??i??s coach.

It is rumored that AIFF are in talks with Rob Baan, who was released from the post of Technical Director of the Socceroos, to take over as Technical Director for Indian Football. AIFF is very shrewdly planning to get a local coach for the national team and obviously none better than Savio as he knows most of the players very well and will have no problem gelling with them. On the other hand, they are striking a big money deal with former Dutch national team, Feyenoord and Australian Football team technical Director. Clearly, the Dutch coach isnai??i??t short of any eye catching bullet points on his CV.
Clearly, after the success of the U-16ai??i??s lately, the AIFF wants to concentrate more on the development of the grassroots and enhancing the facilities. An experienced technical Director like Rob Baan would be an apt choice and could spell success in the upcoming crucial years for Indian football, as pointed out by India centre back Gouramangi Singh recently.
