India 3-2 Malaysia: Chettri’s Brace Sinks The Malayan Tigers

Savio Medeira remains undefeated as the coach of the Indian national team as his young and new look squad got the better of Rajagopal mentored side by three goals to two. With a dissapoining crowd turning up for the second friendly at Yuba Bharati Krirangan, the Indian camp knew a victory here would be very healthy for the teams confidence leading to the SAFF games, starting in the first week of December.

After a somewhat dissapointing draw in the first game at Guwahati, where a late header from the right back Syed Nabi saved team’s blushes, the first team saw many tweaks and shuffling. TheHardTackle analyses both the halves and puts the performance of the men in blue under the microscope.

First half:

Surprisingly, only three players – Sunil Chettri, Syed Nabi and Gourmangi Singh were retained from the first match. Coach Savio replaced Salgaocar custodian, deploying Dempo goalkeeper Subhashish in this match. Mohun Bagan centre half Anwar Ali and Dempo’s Debabrata Roy too got their opportunity. Salgaocar influential duo Francis and Rocus started in the heart of the midfield alonside experienced Baldeep Singh. Lalrindika Ralte replaced veteran Climax Lawrence for this match. Upfront, Sunil Chettri started alongside Pune FC prodigy Jeje Lalpekhlua.

India had a nervy start to the match as initial posession was given away cheaply and malaysian team was getting used to the artificial turf quickly. In the second quarter of the match, Indian team started gelling together as Baldeep Singh took the responsibility to pull the strings and brew attacks. India finally scored through Sunil Chettri, who controlled Nabi’s quick and precise free-kick exquisitely, to cutely finish off a beautiful move over the defense. Just before the lemon break, Md. Safi equalized for the away team . The teams went into the tunnel tied at a goal a piece.

Second half:

Second half witnessed a flurry of goals as the Indians raced to a two-goal lead. In the first minute of the second half, Jeje finished off a majestic Indian move carving open the Malaysian defence. Just seven minutes after that, a francis cross from the left saw the Malaysia goalkeeper saving a clever flick from Jeje, but ball landed in Chettri’s path and the number eleven calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Malaysia soon pulled one back as a through was perfectly threaded through ball Umar, piercingAi??the heart of the Indian defense, providing Md. Safi with his second strike. Savio then made some startegically important subsitutions sumoning Samir Naik and Mahesh Gawli in defense to tighten things up. Anthony and Jewel Raja were dashed into the mix in search of another goal, but the fourth goal, which could have virtually sealed the tie, eluded the young indian brigade.

The match ended with India registering their first triumph under Savio Mederia. As it was more of an experiment oriented line up, Mr. Savio was more than satisfied with the result as he quoted:-
