————————————Transfers Summary ———————————————–
Just like every season, this season too we’ve had plenty of transfers in and out of almost every club in Europe. The usual suspects Manchester City and Real Madrid have dominated the headlines this year too by spending good chunks of Pounds and Euros to buy and strengthen their squads. Just like them, a lot of other teams too have been busy buying and selling their players. So let’s round up the major transfers that have happened in the last couple of months.
English Premier League –
The usual breeding ground for foreign players, EPL teams, continue to bring high profile players to the wet grounds of London, Manchester, Meyseyside, etc. The Eastland Citizens have continued their hegemony in the transfer market by spending an approximate £150 million and signing high profile players such as David Silva, Mario Balotelli, Andreev Kolarov, James Milner, Jerome Boateng and Yaya Toure. The “other side of Manchester in Transfers only” has had a quite two and half months so far by signing relatively unknown but talented youngsters like Chris Smalling, the recently signed versatile Bebe, and the very popular Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez by throwing not more than £20 million. Their bitter adversaries Liverpool have also had a silent time in the transfer market; the only high profile move being Joe Cole’s from Chelsea on a free transfer, adding to the Milan Jovanovic and Poulsen transfers cashing out just £5 million making them the least spenders among the big teams. Champions Chelsea surprisingly have had a lesser impact on the transfer market with 31-year old Yossi Benayoun and Brazilian Ramires the only notable signings from Liverpool and Benfica respectively for a total of £24 million. Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal have managed to acquire Marouane Chamakh from Bordeaux on a free transfer and the unknown Laurent Koscielny while losing Eduardo and Senderos. Arsenal’s eternal foes who broke the top-4 trend in EPL last season – Tottenham – have brought Robbie Keane back to White Hart Lane from Celtic and have sent promising youngster O’Hara on loan to Portsmouth. Aston Villa have signed Stephen Ireland as part of a deal that saw their asset James Milner move to the blue half of Manchester rounding up a relatively silent transfer market for the English clubs minus the free spending Manchester City.
Spanish La Liga –
Spain has no doubt been the hot place for players to ply their trade in the last couple of years. Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate other European clubs when it comes to signing elite and world class talent. The flow remains the same this year too with both the clubs signing super talented players. Barcelona have signed Spanish superstar David Villa for a reported €40 million and wing back Adriano for €15 million, but have let go of veterans Rafael Marquez and Thierry Henry. Barcelona’s greatest rivals Real Madrid have been less active this season compared to last season but have pulled off some impressive coups. Sergio Canales, Angel Di Maria, Pedro Leon, Ricardo Carvalho, Sami Khedira and his German compatriot Mesut Ozil were all bought to wear the famous white shirt for a total €77 million while legends Raul and Guti departed after serving the club for more than 15 years each. City rivals Atletico are not far behind as they have been busy in this summer transfer market capturing Felipe Luis from Deportivo, Tiago from Juventus on a yearlong loan, Godin from Villarreal, Merida from Arsenal, and Mario Suarez from Mallorca for a combined €25 million. Spanish cup champions Sevilla have signed Dabo from St. Ettiene on a free transfer and Guarente from Atalanta for €5 million. Valencia have been busy too as they bolstered their team by bringing in the likes of Roberto Soldado from Getafe, Aduriz from Mallorca, Ricardo Costa from Wolfsberg and Mehmet Topal from Galatasaray spending not more than €18.2 million for these 5 players. Villarreal, Valencia’s town rivals, have managed to sign Spanish world cup winner Carlos Marchena for an undisclosed fee. That wraps up the major transfers that happened in the sunny Iberian nation this summer.
Italian Serie A –
The land of Catenaccio, the land of current Champions League winners, has had their say in the transfer market too. While Inter are the one making the headlines on the pitch, AC are the ones who have made the news in the transfer market. Luca Santonocito, Marco Amelia, Attila Filkor, Marco Ezio Fossati, Papastathopoulos, Mario Yepes and Cristian Daminuta will all be wearing the red and black Rossoneri jersey from this season. AC didn’t disclose the fee of any of these players. Inter have made two important signings in Andrea Ranocchia and Marco Davide Faraoni from Genoa and Lazio; both of them defenders, the latter on a free transfer. Juventus have brought in Italian hot prospect Simone Pepe and Marco Motta, both from Udinese, and both on loan deals while also splashing a further €27 million on Leonardo Bonucci and Jorge Martinez from Bari and Catania respectively. Roma have had their fair share of business this summer as well managing to convince the likes of Bogdan Lobont, Brazilian striker Adriano, Argentine defender Guillermo Burdisso and Fabio Simplicio to play alongside the likes of Totti and De Rossi. Lazio look to do better this term by adding Mark Bresciano, Alvaro Gonzalez, Javier Garrido and Hernanes. Sampdoria and Napoli have added only one player each, Stefano Guberti and Uruguay hot prospect Edinson Cavani respectively, from Roma and Palermo respectively; both on undisclosed fees. Genoa signed the promising “Little Rafa” Rafinha for €8 million from Schalke. Finally, Palermo increased the strength of their squad by signing the likes of Ezequiel Munoz, Santiago Garcia, Francesco Benussi, Massimo Maccarone and Mauricio Pinilla.
Rest of Europe –
In the other leagues, Bayern Leverkusen reunited with Michael Ballack, and also added Nicolai Jorgensen. Bayern Munich added Toni Kroos from Leverkusen and Sosa from Estudiantes. Turkish club Besiktas reignited their squad strength by signing Real Madrid legend Guti and Ricardo Quaresma from Inter. French UCL semifinalists Lyon signed Jimmy Briand from Stade Rennes while Greek club Olympiakos have captured ex-Liverpool winger Albert Riera. Portugal big guns FC Porto captured Joao Moutinho from Sporting Lisbon, in a hope to win the league this season. Bundesliga runner-up Schalke made all the headlines in Germany when Coach Felix Magath convinced Real Madrid son Raul to play in the Bundesliga for them.
In addition, Schalke have also signed Christoph Metzelder from Real Madrid, Kyriakos Papadopoulos from Olympiakos and Sergio Escudero from Real Murcia to add to their ranks. Shakhtar Donetsk boosted their squad strength by bringing back Dmytro Chygrynskiy from Barcelona and capturing Eduardo from Arsenal. In another major switch, Portuguese defender Bruno Alves signed for Russian club Zenit from Porto. Marsielle signed 23-year old striker from Nice for €15 million – Loic Remy. Finally, in one of the transfers of the summer, Wolfsburg captured Danish defender Simon Kjaer from Palermo.
