Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly a loan target for Everton, Leeds United, and several other clubs, as his immediate Chelsea future remains up in the air.
According to 90 min, Trevoh Chalobah could emerge as a loan target for several clubs, including Leeds United and Everton, as his Chelsea future could be under threat due to the club’s pursuit of Wesley Fofana.
Trevoh Chalobah remains one of Chelsea’s highly-rated players. The versatile defender was impressive last season, which could be considered his breakthrough campaign. However, his form has tailed off since the latter stages of the campaign and into the new term.
Chalobah managed 20 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season and at one point looked sure to nail down the right centre-back role under Thomas Tuchel. However, with his form dipping at an alarming rate, the Chelsea boss is considering bringing in a high-profile player in that position.
Chelsea remain in the hunt for Wesley Fofana and have recently had a third bid worth £70 million rejected by Leicester City. The Blues are not backing away from the pursuit and could sign the 21-year-old Frenchman before the transfer deadline.
If that move materialises, Chalobah, already a bench option, will fall further down the pecking order. The summer arrivals of Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella, alongside Tuchel’s preference of Reece James in the right centre-back role, have rendered the 23-year-old a bench option at best.
Fofana’s arrival would kill any slim chances of playing sporadic football this season. The 23-year-old showed his talents last season and will be eager to play regularly. As Chelsea continue to rate the defender very highly, they are unlikely to sanction a permanent departure and would be open to allowing a loan departure.
There are plenty of clubs showing an interest in Chalobah. Leeds United and Everton lead the charge in the Premier League, while there is sufficient interest from Inter Milan and AS Roma from Italy. The Chelsea defender will likely move on loan before the window shuts.
Leeds United remain in the market for opportunities that improve the squad for the current season. A player like Chalobah will undoubtedly strengthen their defensive ranks, which was a problem last season. Whether Jesse Marsch would want a player who would improve and then depart next summer remains to be seen, but the 23-year-old Chelsea prospect could be an exciting option.
Similarly, for Everton, Frank Lampard is keen to bolster his squad, and a defender like Chalobah, who he knows well from his days as Chelsea boss, could improve their current standing. However, having brought in James Tarkowski and Conor Coady in this window, a new centre-back may not be Everton’s priority at this stage.
As for Chalobah, he will have to decide on his future in the limited time left in the window. A route to Italy might be tempting, seeing his former Chelsea teammate Fikayo Tomori excel there, although he might also consider interest from English clubs like Everton and Leeds United.
