Sergio Gomez is reportedly keen on joining Manchester City, who will likely loan him out to sister club Girona if they sign the Spanish full-back this summer.
According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City remain in negotiations with Anderlecht over a deal for Spanish full-back Sergio Gomez. And the Premier League champions have received a major boost, with the 21-year-old keen on moving to the Etihad.
If Manchester City reach a full agreement for the Anderlecht defender in the coming days, they have held internal discussions with sister club Girona FC about a possible developmental loan move for Gomez for the upcoming season.
Sergio Gomez comes with a good pedigree, having graduated from Barcelona’s La Masia youth setup before being picked up by Borussia Dortmund at the age of 17. However, after failing to nail down a regular first-team spot at the Signal Iduna Park, the 21-year-old spent the next two seasons on loan at SD Huesca who he helped seal a return to the Spanish top-flight.
Gomez was then snapped up by Anderlecht on a four-year deal last summer and played a key role under the tutelage of Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany, helping the Belgian outfit to a third-place finish in the Belgian First Division in the 2021/22 season.

It is safe to say Gomez was arguably the best left-back in Belgium last term as he produced a remarkable output from a defensive position, registering 17 goal contributions in 34 games – five goals and 12 assists. However, it looks as if his time in Brussels is set to be cut short, with Manchester City pushing for his signature.
With Chelsea seemingly hijacking Manchester City’s pursuit of Brighton star Marc Cucurella, the Premier league champions have turned their attention to another Spaniard. The 21-year-old is viewed as a future star by the Citizens due to a lack of options at left-back. They regard the Spanish full-back as a high-potential prospect who has the ability to blossom into a first-team player in the future.
Manchester City have extensively scouted the Spanish Under-21 international, who primarily plays as a left-back but is versatile enough to operate in midfield, whether it be central or attacking. Gomez was initially thought to be Manchester City’s like-for-like alternative to Cucurella. However, they seem to have a different plan for Gomez should they complete the deal.
As per Fabrizio Romano, internal discussions are being held about potentially loaning the 21-year-old to Manchester City’s sister club Girona if an agreement can be found following talks with Anderlecht in the coming days. They have also received a green light from the player’s camp to set the wheels in motion.
A loan spell makes perfect sense considering Gomez’s inexperience in a top league and the fact that he is still behind in the development curve in comparison to their former target Cucurella. This also means the Manchester City are still keen on signing a more senior option alongside Gomez to provide strong competition for current left-back Joao Cancelo.
Names such as Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo and VfB Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa have been mentioned in the past few days, but no concrete links have emerged as of yet.
