Leeds United are keeping tabs on PSV Eindhoven’s in-demand attacker Cody Gakpo, who is set to cost around €30 million.
According to Foot Mercato, Leeds United are keeping one eye on the situation of Cody Gakpo. The PSV Eindhoven starlet has been identified as a potential replacement for Raphinha, in case the Brazilian leaves Elland Road in the summer. PSV value Gakpo at around €30 million, although Leeds should not much difficulty in meeting the price tag.
A left wigner by trade, Gakpo has become one of the most sought-after players in the Netherlands following an exceptional 2021/22 campaign. Although the forward has been a part of the PSV side for a while now, he took his game to a whole new level this past season, especially following the exit of Donyell Malen.
In 46 matches in all competitions, the 23-year-old was involved in a total of 36 goals. He scored 12 goals and mustered 13 assists in the Eredivisie alone, although it was not enough to help PSV seal the league title. The Dutch giants were beaten by Ajax by a margin of just two points.
Gakpo, nevertheless, has become a subject of interest for a host of clubs across Europe in light of his blazing performances in the Netherlands. Leeds United are among the clubs keeping close tabs on the Dutchman, who has been identified as an ideal replacement for Raphinha.
After enjoying yet another impressive season in the Premier League, Raphinha has become a top target for Barcelona this summer. The Brazilian international has even reportedly agreed personal terms with the Catalans, with his agent Deco personally assisting Barca. Leeds United have managed to keep hold of the player with their staggering demands.
However, the Whites are also making preparations in case Raphinha does end up leaving Elland Road in the summer. That is where Cody Gakpo comes into the fray, with coach Jesse Marsch keen on securing him as a direct replacement for the Brazilian.
The winger’s productivity, coupled with his ability to create chances should make him an ideal attacking partner for the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison next season. The Dutchman also brings experience to the table, having featured in 134 competitive matches for PSV.
While one would expect Leeds to have problems meeting Gakpo’s €30 million valuation, the potential exit of Raphinha should be enough to fund the move for the Dutchman, although the Whites would ideally like to keep hold of the former Rennes winger beyond the summer.
