Leeds United are reportedly set to battle it out with Premier League rivals in the race to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Ben Brereton Diaz.
According to TEAMtalk, Leeds United have re-entered the fray in the race to sign Ben Brereton Diaz. After narrowly avoiding relegation, the Premier League outfit are keen on upgrading their options in the offensive unit. Brereton has emerged as one of their top targets, although they are facing stiff competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton, among many others.
Ben Brereton Diaz currently plies his trade with Blackburn Rovers. During his years in the lower divisions of English football, the 23-year-old Chilean international was an obscure attacking talent. But that changed after a promising Copa America campaign with Chile last summer, followed by an excellent 2021/22 campaign.
Standing at 1.85m, Brereton was able to find the back of the net 22 times in 37 league matches. His brilliant numbers in front of goal, coupled with his aggressive style of play and work ethic in the final third have made him one of the most sought-after players in the second division.
Brereton’s current contract at Blackburn expires at the end of next season. With the club failing to earn promotion to the top-flight, the 23-year-old forward is set to leave Ewood Park in the summer. Leeds United are already on high alert, along with a few other Premier League clubs looking to shore up their options in the attacking unit.
With Patrick Bamford struggling with injury throughout the 2021/22 campaign, Leeds are in the market for a new forward in the summer. They have been linked with a move for Liverpool outcast Takumi Minamino, but Jesse Marsch appears to favour Brereton’s aggressive style of play that goes hand in hand with the American’s tactical philosophy.
The Chilean international also has a proven goalscoring record in the Championship. Brereton could only improve his record at Leeds United, where he could feed off of service from potential new signing Brenden Aaronson, who will join Leeds in July.
Leeds United are also trying everything they can to keep hold of star player Raphinha. The potential combination of Raphinha, Aaronson and Brereton could go a long way in helping the Whites to push for a mid-table finish in the coming season.
Leeds, though, must brace themselves for stiff competition from Wolves and Southampton, while West Ham United are believed to be in the ascendancy, as far as Brereton’s pursuit is concerned. With two months still remaining until the start of next season, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 23-year-old Chilean international this summer.
