Real Madrid defender Eder Militao is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract with the club amid transfer interest from Chelsea.
According to AS, Eder Militao is poised to sign a new long-term contract with Real Madrid that will see his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu extended until the summer of 2028. The Brazilian defender had been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer but is set to put all speculations to bed by inking a new deal.
Militao joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2019 from FC Porto, with the Spanish champions shelling out €50 million to sign him. The 24-year-old endured a difficult debut campaign with Los Blancos. He failed to dislodge Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos from the starting XI while failing to make the most of his chances when given an opportunity.
However, Militao’s star has been on the rise since the 2020/21 campaign. The Brazilian did a fine job of filling in for Ramos, who spent the most of the 2020/21 season out injured and has continued in top form since the departure of the former Real Madrid captain and Raphael Varane last summer.
Indeed, Militao has forged a brilliant defensive partnership with David Alaba, essaying a crucial role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and UEFA Champions League triumph in the 2021/22 campaign. A mainstay at the back now, the 24-year-old is set to be rewarded with a new and improved contract by the champions of Spain and Europe.
Militao currently pockets a net salary of €3.5 million per season and is one of the lowest earners in the Real Madrid squad. And the club are prepared to offer him much improved terms to tie down his long-term future at the club, especially with clubs like Chelsea sniffing around.
Chelsea are in the market for defensive reinforcements as they are set to lose Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid and Andreas Christensen to Barcelona. With at least one new centre-back needed, the Blues have been heavily linked with a move for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. But at the same time, they have been keeping tabs on Militao and were planning negotiations with the Brazilian international.
But Real Madrid are set to put an end to all speculations by extending Militao’s contract. The defender, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2025, will be penning new terms on a six-year contract that will be valid until 2028. On top of that, he will also be handed much improved terms, which reflect his status within the squad.
The report adds that an agreement between the two parties is close, and confirmation of Militao’s new Real Madrid contract might not be too far away.
