Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make a renewed attempt to sign Brighton star Yves Bissouma in the summer transfer window.
According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to rekindle their interest in Brighton & Hove Albion’s midfield general Yves Bissouma in the upcoming 2022 summer transfer window.
The Mali international is one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders and has been one of the Seagulls’ top players in recent seasons. At 25, he is primed to take the next step in his development and can evolve into a world-class star under the right guidance.
Tottenham have been linked with the Brighton ace for some time now. Now that they have qualified for the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League, the club finds itself in a strong position to attract top talent. Moreover, an infusion of £150 million by ENIC will also hand the North London club with funds to make required reinforcements.
Bissouma is a capable player who is not just adept at breaking up play but also making vital interceptions and carrying the ball up the field as required. These traits would add some much-needed dynamism to the Tottenham midfield. Partnering the Malian alongside Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg or Rodrigo Bentancur will give Antonio Conte a midfield nexus around which he can build a winning team.
The 25-year-old’s contract at The Amex expires in 2023, meaning he has little over a year left on his current deal. Brighton run the risk of losing their star man for free next year and could decide to cash in on him this summer. Bissouma is expected to cost Spurs around £30 million, a fair amount considering what he will add to their roster.
Conte will not have an easy route to landing their man as Bissouma is also on the radar of Aston Villa. Steven Gerrard’s outfit had outbid Spurs for the player back in January, and history might repeat itself this summer.
Aston Villa have already signed Boubacar Kamara and have now set their eyes on Bissouma. Having the duo at their disposal will give them a double pivot that can work wonders next season. This lack of muscle in the middle of the park cost them dearly on the final day of the Premier League season against Manchester City.
Gerrard is a legendary midfielder from his era and is well aware of the importance of having a solid pivot in the middle of the pitch. Just how much he will push for Bissouma’s signing and what impact it will have on Tottenham’s pursuit is to be seen.
