Barcelona have reportedly made yet another positive stride in their pursuit of Chelsea fullback Marcos Alonso.
Reputed transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Marcos Alonso. It appears the Catalan giants are in advanced talks with the Chelsea full-back over personal terms. Alonso is determined to leave London at the end of the season, with the defender prioritising a return to Spain.
Formerly of Fiorentina, Alonso has been plying his trade at Chelsea since 2016. Although he has faced his fair share of criticism during his time at Stamford Bridge, the Spanish full-back has been quite successful as well, winning the Premier League, UEFA Europa League, Champions League and the FA Cup once.
With over 200 competitive appearances for the Blues, Alonso has also established himself as one of the senior members of the team, especially with Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta in contention to join Barcelona this summer.
But it appears Alonso could be on the move as well, knowing he has fallen behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order. With Chelsea also involved in the race to sign Borna Sosa, Alonso’s role in the first team could dwindle further in the new season, so a move away from Stamford Bridge appears to be the most logical solution.
Alonso’s precarious situation has put Barcelona on alert. The Catalan giants are looking for a reliable backup for the ageing left-back Jordi Alba, who is currently the only recognised option in the position. Barcelona have targeted several talented left-backs across Europe, including Alejandro Grimaldo, Angelino and even Raphael Guerreiro.
But they are not in a position to afford most of them in light of their precarious financial situation. As such, Xavi Hernandez has now set his sights on Marcos Alonso. The Chelsea defender is likely to be available on a cut-price deal this summer while his vast experience at the highest level of football could prove to be useful for a young team like Barcelona.
While agreeing personal terms with Alonso should not be a problem, Barcelona’s deal to sign the full-back could hinge on his price tag. The Blaugrana are not willing to pay massive transfer fees for the Spaniard, as his current Chelsea deal expires at the end of next season.
