Manchester United are keen to extend David de Gea’s stay at Old Trafford and are set to initiate negotiations for a new contract.
According to 90min, Manchester United are ready to extend goalkeeper David de Gea’s stay at the club and will initiate talks regarding a new deal for the Spaniard.
The 31-year-old has been with the Red Devils since 2011 and is one of a handful of players who have won the Premier League with the Red Devils and is still at the club. He has made 483 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions and has kept 164 clean sheets in the process.
Several managers have come and gone at Old Trafford since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson but de Gea continues to hold the fort as the club’s torchbearer in goal. He has been one of their best performers this season in a largely underwhelming campaign.
With Erik ten Hag set to take over as the new Manchester United manager this summer, a new dawn is on the horizon at the Theatre of Dreams. De Gea appears to have a spot to his name in the Red Devils’ rebuild and looks set to be offered a fresh deal.
The Spaniard’s current contract expires in 2023, and at 31, he is not getting any younger. However, he has a few years left in him and, as a senior, could have a key role to play under ten Hag. With a summer overhaul in the works, Manchester United must counterbalance this rebuild with stability. The club believe de Gea to be that man.
The shot-stopper has stepped up massively for Manchester United during his tenure at the club and will surely go down as an all-time great. He is fifth in the club’s all-time appearance list and could join an elite list of Red Devils stars to breach the 500-cap mark.
De Gea has been vocal about ten Hag’s appointments and is keen to work with the Dutchman. It would appear that the club view him as an essential asset and will do their best to see him extend that legacy. The Spaniard has had his moments of glory at Old Trafford over the years. Being a part of the rebuild that will potentially take the team back to the top could be his best work just yet.
