Aston Villa and Newcastle United are set to go head to head in the pursuit of Juventus playmaker Aaron Ramsey.
According to Sport Mediaset, Aaron Ramsey is set to leave Juventus in the January transfer window. The playmaker has not trained with the first team for a while now and has clearly fallen out of favour under Massimiliano Allegri. He is now prepared to negotiate the terms of a potential departure this month in a likely attempt to return to the Premier League.
Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been listed as the two potential suitors, although earlier reports had also suggested the involvement of the player’s former club, Arsenal. The likes of Sevilla and Everton have been in the mix, too, suggesting an interesting transfer saga, as the Welshman looks to take the next step in his career.
Newcastle and Villa remain the frontrunners, with the latter, in particular, keen on the services of a new midfielder that can add variety to Steven Gerrard’s setup. The Englishman has shown a lot of desire in the market this January, particularly when it comes to reuniting with a few of the Rangers players, including Joe Aribo.
But Gerrard may also welcome a move for Ramsey, who can add more balance and flexibility to the team, as he is able to operate in central midfield and even in wider roles if required.
Newcastle United have held an interest in the Welshman for a while now, as the club are looking for an upgrade on their existing midfield players. With almost 400 appearances for Arsenal, Ramsey’s experience in English football and his pedigree at the highest level makes him an appealing option for Eddie Howe.
The Magpies have no shortage of alternatives, though, having recently been linked with a move for Yusuf Yazici. The Turkish international is a more dynamic option when compared to Ramsey and will be keen on proving himself in the Premier League after a rather mixed spell at LOSC Lille.
However, it is difficult to imagine NUFC turning down the opportunity to sign someone as experienced as Ramsey. So it will be interesting to see the Magpies and the Villans tussle it out for the services of the Juventus playmaker this month, and with Arsenal reportedly in the mix, we could be in for a pleasant surprise.
