European Champions Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a move for 24-year-old Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.
According to Fichajes, Premier League giants Chelsea are plotting a move for Argentine sensation Lautaro Martinez.
The Inter Milan star is one of the best forwards in Serie A. He joined the Nerazzurri from Racing Club in 2018 and has since gone from strength to strength. Martinez has so far made 153 appearances for the club, scoring 59 goals and assisting 22 more.
With ten goals in 15 league games this season, Martinez is helping lead Inter to what could potentially be a successful title defence. He scored twice in last weekend’s win over Cagliari that saw Simone Inzaghi’s side move to the top of the Serie A standings.
Both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku have failed to establish themselves as infallible scorers at Stamford Bridge. It does leave a void in what is otherwise an excellent Chelsea side. The Blues appear keen to address the issue and are believed to have set their sights on Erling Haaland and Martinez.
Haaland is easily the better goalscorer of the two players. However, Martinez is cheaper and could prove to be a wise buy. Not only is he coming into his own as a player, but he has also proven to be the perfect foil to Lukaku.
The duo paired up to lead Inter to a much-awaited Scudetto title last season. Despite the big Belgian moving to Chelsea, Martinez has continued to thrive, adding another dimension to his game. Taking him to Stamford Bridge could add more bite to the Blues attack and also give Lukaku the partner he craves to thrive.
Capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, the 24-year-old would offer Tuchel several options. Also, given that he is still to enter his prime, Chelsea could be landing themselves a long term solution to their striking woes.
A key cog in the Inter outfit, it remains to be seen if the Italians will sell their prized asset. The Argentine recently extended his stay at San Siro until 2026. This gives the Nerazzurri a big advantage when it comes to negotiations.
As seen with Lukaku, Chelsea appear ready to splash the cash when needed. Martinez certainly fits the bill, and it remains to be seen just what it will take for Inter to blink. Whether the west Londoners will get their man come next summer remains to be seen.
