Real Madrid reportedly view Andreas Christensen as a viable alternative to his Chelsea teammate Antonio Rudiger.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Andreas Christensen has emerged on Real Madrid’s radar as a viable alternative to Antonio Rudiger. The Spanish giants are set to face defeat in pursuit of the German defender, with Chelsea ready to offer him a bumper new deal to tempt him to commit his long-term future.
Andreas Christensen has been with Chelsea since joining their famed academy from Brondby IF in 2012. However, after a two-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, the Dane finally made his breakthrough in the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.
To date, Christensen has turned out 135 times for Chelsea, chipping in with a goal and an assist in the process. However, with the 25-year-old entering his current contract’s final year, the Blues are in a spot of bother over his long-term future. Such a situation has captured the attention of Real Madrid.
The interest from Real Madrid is understandable, considering their need to bolster the heart of their defence. While David Alaba arrived in the summer to reinforce the backline, it is worth noting that the Los Blancos lost the services of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, with only one central defensive option coming into the squad.
As a result, the Spanish giants have been found wanting at the back in many of their games thus far this season. So, it is hardly surprising that several centre-backs have been linked with Real Madrid in recent weeks, with Antonio Rudiger one of their key targets.
It has even been suggested that the Chelsea defender is in advanced talks to join Real Madrid. However, the Merengues have faced a major blow in pursuit of Rudiger, who is set to be offered a bumper new deal by the Premier League heavyweights.
The west Londoners are prepared to offer the 28-year-old a contract with a net worth around €14 million per year in addition to €10 million in loyalty bonus. Such a proposal could tempt Rudiger to stay put at Chelsea while forcing Real Madrid to scour the transfer market for alternatives.
To that end, Christensen, who is currently in a situation not too dissimilar to Rudiger, has emerged as a viable alternative for Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are now looking to open discussions to reach a pre-contract agreement at the turn of the year, and it remains to be seen if Christensen leaves Chelsea instead of Rudiger to join Real Madrid.
