Leeds United are interested in Noussair Mazraoui, who could be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
According to Football Insider, Leeds United are prioritising the signing of Noussair Mazraoui next summer, with the right-back set to be available on a free transfer. The Morrocan has intensified matters and indicated a move away from Ajax by hiring Mino Raiola as his new agent.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have not started their season brightly; rather, they have struggled to score points in what has been a tough start to their campaign. They have failed to replicate last season’s form, as they languish in 16th place, just above the relegation zone, having earned three points just once in seven games so far.
They have several problems, one of which is the cohesion between teammates, and Bielsa would like to identify several players early to strengthen the squad. While they could make some vital signings in the January window, next summer represents an important phase for the club.
The Yorkshire-based club is not exactly the wealthiest; hence, they are eyeing up few bargain deals already. Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui has featured heavily on their radar in the past weeks, with Bielsa considering signing the right-back.
Mazraoui could be available on a free transfer if Ajax fails to agree on an extension with the Morrocan in the coming weeks. He could sign a pre-contract agreement as soon as January while seeing out the rest of the season in Amsterdam.
Leeds are facing a shortage in the right-back area, with first-choice Luke Ayling currently injured. Without another viable option in the squad, Bielsa has resorted to playing Stuart Dallas and Jamie Shakleton in that position. The manager would like to have a decent option there as a cover and competition for Ayling.
Moreover, Ayling, 30, has a contract until 2023, and Leeds will be eyeing a long term solution for the position. Mazraoui could prove to be this player, as his impressive displays for Ajax suggests. He is a hard-working, marauding full-back who likes to contribute more to the pitch’s attacking end. Having played over 110 games for Ajax, he has represented Morroco 12 times at the age of 23.
This season, Mazraoui has started rather brightly, scoring four goals and providing three assists in prolific performances. He could certainly fit into Bielsa’s system, and those numbers show why the manager himself might be interested in the player.
Arsenal are also reportedly interested in the full-back, as Mikel Arteta eyes an offensive right-back. Barcelona could also ponder a move for the Morrocan, as they too eye bargain signings owing to their financial situation. Leeds will have to brush aside elite competition for the player.
While Ajax wants to extend his contract, Mazraoui has indicated a departure by signing up Mino Raiola as his new representative. The super-agent could accelerate a move to new surroundings with a move to Leeds or any other club certainly a possibility.
