Andre Onana is reportedly open to the prospect of returning to Camp Nou, with Barcelona ready to battle Inter Milan for his services.
According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are set to wage battle with Inter Milan to secure the services of Andre Onana on a Bosman move in next summer’s transfer window. And the 25-year-old is open to rejoining the Catalan giants, although he will first wait to learn the sporting project of the club.
Andre Onana joined Ajax in January 2015 after spending five years in Barcelona’s fabled academy La Masia. The move to Amsterdam has worked wonders for his career for the most part, as he has been the first-choice goalkeeper for much of the past half a decade after making his first-team debut for the Dutch giants.
However, the Cameroonian goalkeeper is currently serving a doping ban for mistakenly consuming a tablet of banned substance. To date, he has made 204 appearances for Ajax, keeping 83 clean sheets while conceding just 180 goals. Onana, though, is set to depart the Johan Cruijff ArenA next summer as a free agent, which has alerted Barcelona, among others.
This is not the first time that Barcelona have been linked with Onana, but next summer could well be the perfect time for them to make their move for the 25-year-old. That is because Neto is likely to depart Camp Nou in search of regular game-time after failing to secure a summer exit from the club.
In addition, there are doubts over the future of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, as per recent reports, which could create the need for a new first-choice goalkeeper. With that in mind, Onana is a viable target for Barcelona, who have even held discussion with his representatives on several occasions already.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Ajax goalkeeper is prepared to return to Camp Nou next summer on a Bosman move. However, before taking his final call, Onana wants to know the details of the project at Barcelona and what their plans are for him.
If the sporting project does not appeal to him, chances are the goalkeeper could be on his way to Inter Milan instead, with the Nerazzurri eyeing him as the long-term succcessor for captain Samir Handanovic. With that in mind, it looks like an exciting summer battle is being set up between Inter and Barcelona, and it remains to be seen where Onana ends up next summer.
