London giants Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are set to rival Liverpool for young Porto midfielder Luis Diaz.
According to Tribal Football, Premier League giants Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for Liverpool target Luis Diaz.
The Colombian international is attracting attention from across Europe given his impressive performances for Portuguese giants Porto. He arrived at the Estadio do Dragao in 2019 and is now an established member of Sergio Conceicao’s squad.
Diaz has made nine appearances for Porto this season and has scored five goals and assisted one more. At 24, he is at the right age to be a long-term solution and perform right off the bat. Primarily a left midfielder, he is capable of playing on either flank effectively. This versatility will put him in good stead should he move to a bigger club.
Both Chelsea and Spurs have gone in separate directions in recent years but it can be argued that both sides could do with reinforcements on the wings. The Blues invested in Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic in recent windows but neither of them has really established themselves as definite first XI material.
The Blues do have another option in Callum Hudson-Odoi, who despite his potential is yet to establish himself as a regular. Thomas Tuchel has built an excellent side but could with a dependable option down the flanks. Diaz certainly has the potential to be that man.
Spurs, meanwhile, are in limbo and have struggled in recent weeks. Their attack is largely reliant on Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane. Having one player out of form could throw their attacking acumen into chaos, let alone both.
The Lilywhites have many options in their ranks, namely Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Ryan Sessegnon and even Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso. However, none of them has shown the semblance of consistency needed to thrive on a top side. Adding Diaz would be a welcome move and bring in a fresh player who has shown the ability to think outside the box.
Liverpool, however, is another matter. The Reds continue to impress under Jurgen Klopp and have one of the best first XI across Europe. It is, however, ageing and will need an infusion of young blood soon.
Diaz moving to Anfield is unlikely to get him a regular spot on the first XI, at least not initially. Not only could he become a major player in Klopp’s rebuild, but he can also learn tricks of the trade from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Both wingers are amongst the finest in their generation and will have oodles of wisdom to impart.
The 24-year-old has no lack of options. The likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AS Roma are all keen on the player and welcome the opportunity to sign him. Where exactly the South American will decide to go next remains to be seen.
