Manchester City have agreed personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane but will Daniel Levy play spoilsport?
Talking on the Reach PLC’s Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Express), transfer guru Ian McGarry has revealed that Manchester City have agreed personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.
The English skipper is one of the best strikers globally and is currently in the prime of his career. He would be an excellent addition to a City side that recently parted ways with club legend Sergio Aguero. Pep Guardiola’s side could not ask for a better goalscorer to replace the Argentine than Kane.
Despite scoring bucketloads of goals, Kane has been unable to drag Tottenham to silverware. At 28, he is not getting any younger, and it is debatable if Nuno Espirito Santo can help him achieve what he wants in North London. Rumours of an exit reached crescendo levels when it was revealed last week that the player has not reported back to training.
While he has since spoken out and revealed that his actions were taken out of context, the jury is still out on his future. If McGarry is to be believed, the groundwork has already been laid for the player to move to The Etihad. With personal terms already agreed, the onus is now on both clubs to eke out a fee.
“Kane has effectively agreed on personal terms with City and his representatives, and that they are simply waiting on Daniel Levy to agree on the fee,” McGarry said.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not a man to be trifled with and will hold out for top dollar for his best player. More so, with Kane’s contract running until 2024, the North Londoners hold enough sway in negotiations. City, for their part, are not short of money and have already gone big to land Jack Grealish earlier this week.
Despite the talents at their disposal, the lack of cutting edge in the attack was laid bare in last season’s UEFA Champions League final and Saturday’s Community Shield clash. Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres are impressive on their day but lack the consistency expected of a City striker. Kane can be the infallible scorer that Guardiola is crying out for and can help the Manchester-based side take the next step.
Alongside Grealish, he will add proven quality to the team and be the difference-maker they need in the final third. Tottenham, for their part, appear to be readying themselves for an imminent departure. They have gone big in their efforts to land Inter Milan Lautaro Martinez. While Inter remains determined to hold out, whether Spurs can force their hand remains to be seen. Dusan Vlahovic is another name that has been linked heavily.
The North Londoners, as things stand, might have no other choice. After all, losing Kane will not only see them strengthen a direct rival but also deprive them of a major source of goals. Curiously enough, both sides face off against each other in the Premier League opener next week. What colours Kane will be sporting that night remains to be seen.
