Chelsea have reportedly identified Romelu Lukaku as the alternative for Erling Haaland, with a bid being formulated for the former Manchester United forward.
According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Chelsea seem to be keeping their options open in case they are unable to land Erling Haaland in the summer transfer window. The Premier League giants view former Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku as “Plan B”, with an offer prepared to sign him from Inter Milan.
Romelu Lukaku has made giant strides since leaving Manchester United in the summer of 2019. Having faced the threat of falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford, the Belgian international chose to join Inter Milan, with the move paying off handsomely so far.
Now widely regarded as one of the best forwards in Europe, the 28-year-old has racked up a tally of 64 goals and 16 assists in 95 appearances to date for Inter, while having played a pivotal role in their Serie A triumph last term. Suffice to say, Lukaku has captured the attention of the who’s who of the game, with former club Chelsea, in particular, keen on signing him.
Chelsea’s priority attacking target this summer is Erling Haaland, who is reportedly open to joining the English heavyweights. However, the pursuit of the Norwegian prodigy is nothing short of complicated, considering the financials that will be involved in addition to Borussia Dortmund’s reluctance to part ways with him this summer.
In fact, the Bundesliga outfit have already rejected the opening bid from Chelsea, who are now being forced to consider alternatives. To that end, the Blues have set their sights on Lukaku, who has not been linked with his former club for the first time this summer.
Chelsea now appear to be seriously considering a summer move for the Belgian striker, having prepared an offer to tempt financially-stricken Inter Milan to cash in on him. Having said that, the 28-year-old has previously iterated his desire to stay put at San Siro, meaning Chelsea will have their task cut out in landing him.
The west Londoners do seem to be laying down the groundwork to clear out space for a new striker, with Olivier Giroud joining AC Milan while Tammy Abraham is expected to be offloaded as well. What now remains to be seen is if Chelsea can make any inroads in pursuit of Lukaku or if they are forced to turn their attention towards some other alternative for Haaland.
