Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close watch on the situation of English winger Raheem Sterling, who is said to have grown unhappy at Manchester City.
According to a report from Defensa Central, La Liga giants Real Madrid are monitoring Manchester City superstar Raheem Sterling after it emerged that the England international is not happy with his situation at the Etihad Stadium.
Sterling signed for Manchester City in the summer of 2015, arriving from rivals Liverpool. After a rather difficult first year, the 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength once Pep Guardiola took over the reins at the club, establishing himself as one of the finest attackers in the Premier League.
Sterling has played an integral role in the immense success that the Cityzens have achieved in recent years, but things seem to have hit the rocks between the club and the player because of recent developments.
The 26-year-old saw his role significantly reduced towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign while The Athletic (h/t Defensa Central) reported that the Englishman was left disappointed by City’s plan to offer him to Tottenham as part of the deal to bring in Harry Kane this summer.
And Real Madrid are now keeping a close eye on these developments, mulling over the possibility of a swoop for the former Liverpool winger. It is no secret that Los Blancos could do with some injection of fresh blood into their attacking unit, given as Eden Hazard struggles with fitness problems. At the same time, the likes of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Marco Asensio have not been consistent enough.
Sterling, who is coming on the back of a solid season during which he produced a tally of 14 goals and 12 assists in 49 games, has been in top form in the UEFA Euro 2020 as well, helping England to a place in the finals of the tournament. So, adding someone like him would be a major boost for Carlo Ancelotti, who is also looking at Everton’s Richarlison to bolster his attacking options.
However, the report adds that Real Madrid’s priority for the summer remains Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe. But, in case a move for him does not materialise, the Merengues would consider making a move for Sterling, whose transfer market is said to be around €90 million, given as Erling Haaland is unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund until next summer.
For now, Real Madrid continue to monitor the England international and the development of his situation at Manchester City. It remains to be seen if this leads to a summer move for the 26-year-old.
