Barcelona have reportedly established contact with Serie A club Atalanta to inquire about 26-year-old German defender Robin Gosens.
According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Barcelona seem to have stepped up their efforts to sign Robin Gosens in the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana have made an approach to Atalanta to submit an enquiry for the 26-year-old German international.
Robin Gosens has enjoyed a stunning rise to fame since joining Atalanta from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2017. Over the past four years, Gian Piero Gasperini has brought the best out of the 26-year-old, whose progress has also helped him establish a foothold in the German national side.
2020/21 has ended up being a particularly memorable campaign for Gosens, who has 12 goals and 8 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. However, with his contract having a little over a year remaining left for it to run out, Atalanta are in a vulnerable position over his future, especially with Barcelona keen on swooping the defender away from the Serie A outfit.
Barcelona are eager to sign a left-back in the summer transfer window owing to the fact that Junior Firpo has barely managed to impress since arriving from Real Betis in the summer of 2019. With Jordi Alba now on the wrong side of 30, the Catalan giants are in a position where they need to start laying down the succession plan for the Spanish international.
At the same time, they also need to sign a player who can provide competition to Alba. To that end, a move for Jose Gaya has been mooted, with the Valencia captain unlikely to take long to settle in at Camp Nou. However, any pursuit of the Spaniard will be complicated, which is why Barcelona seem to be keeping their options open.

To that end, Gosens has emerged as a viable target for the Blaugrana, with the 26-year-old being the perfect fit in the system that is currently in place at Camp Nou. And now, it looks like Barcelona have made their first move for the German defender, having approached Atalanta over a possible summer move.
What will now be interesting to see is if the Serie A outfit entertain any offer for Gosens as we get closer to the summer transfer window or if they make an effort to tie him down to a new deal. If that proves to be the case then Barcelona will have to turn their attention elsewhere. For now, an intriguing summer beckons Barcelona, Atalanta and Gosens.
