Transfer News: Tottenham join Chelsea, Manchester United in Daryl Dike pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to rival Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Championship’s rising star Daryl Dike this summer.

According to a report by 90 min blog The Top Flight, Daryl Dike is seemingly attracting interest from a host of top clubs across English football. His performances with Barnsley FC have been more than impressive, with the striker now being deemed as the “Oklahoman Lukaku”.

Earlier reports had suggested that both Manchester United and Chelsea have been alerted to Dike’s situation, but it seems Tottenham Hotspur, too, have now joined the race to sign the forward, who is currently on loan from Orlando City FC.

Although Barnsley are in pole position to sign Dike in the summer as they have a buyout clause worth around £20 million, the future of the player at Oakwell Stadium could hinge on the club’s final league position in the table.

The Tykes are pretty much in the race to secure qualification in the Premier League next season, which will give them the financial leverage as well as the sporting prospect to sign Dike permanently.

Nevertheless, Premier League giants including Chelsea and Manchester United are more than likely to try their luck in the pursuit of the American forward, who could prove to be an ideal long-term replacement for ageing strikers like Olivier Giroud and Edinson Cavani, both of whom are expected to leave Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively, at the end of the season.

Tottenham, though, are a curious case as they are preparing for a major squad overhaul in the summer transfer window. Recent reports already suggest that star player Harry Kane is unsettled amid the club’s incompetence in Europe and in domestic competitions. It could lead to a potential exit in the summer, with  Barcelona among clubs reportedly interested.

Someone like Daryl Dike serves as a cost-effective option in Jose Mourinho’s bid to replace or offer provide a genuine back-up for Kane next season. The Tottenham manager’s former employers Manchester United, though, may also step up their pursuit of the 20-year-old, who can not only replace Cavani but may also prove to be a better option than the underperforming Anthony Martial.

Either way, this is going to be an exciting summer transfer window for Dike. The forward, for one, will be hoping to finish the campaign on a strong note, perhaps even helping Barnsley secure promotion that will go a long way in earning him a big-money move to a top club, amid the interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham.

It can not only enhance his reputation but also raise the eyebrows of Gregg Berhalter ahead of the FIFA World Cup next year. For now, it looks like Tottenham have joined Chelsea, Manchester United and others in pursuit of the young forward ahead of the summer.
