Manchester City are reportedly considering a shock move to secure the services of ex-Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.
According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Romelu Lukaku has been identified as a possible long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero by Manchester City. The Premier League heavyweights are, therefore, eyeing a move to sign the former Manchester United striker in the summer transfer window.
Lukaku joined Inter Milan from Manchester United in the summer of 2019 following a roller-coaster of a stint with the Red Devils. The Belgian international has since resurrected a stuttering career, having become a pivotal figure for the Nerazzurri at San Siro, often scoring goals at will.
In 74 appearances for the Serie A heavyweights, Lukaku has a superb tally of 51 goals and 9 assists to show for his efforts. With Lukaku once again becoming one of the best strikers in the world, it is unsurprising that he is starting to pop up on the radars of some of the biggest clubs in the world. One such suitor in pursuit of the former Manchester United striker are Manchester City.
For years, Manchester City have not had to worry about the central striker’s berth, with Sergio Aguero being one of the most feared players in the Premier League. However, the Argentine has evidently declined a great deal in the past year and has hardly managed to turn out for the Citizens this term.
As a result, it is hardly surprising that Manchester City are laying down the succession plan for the veteran striker. Erling Haaland is a name that has been discussed quite regularly, with the Norwegian wonderkid still very much on their radar. And now, former Manchester United star Lukaku has also emerged as a target for the Premier League heavyweights.
The 27-year-old has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid previously and with Pep Guardiola set to be backed by a £200 million transfer kitty in the summer, he could well become a major target for Manchester City, if they do press ahead with the succession plan for Aguero.
Apart from Lukaku and Haaland, Darwin Nunez is also a target for City and it has been suggested that they are only likely to enter the market for a striker in the summer transfer window. What now remains to be seen is if Manchester City do make a move for Lukaku after the season ends, and if the ex-Manchester United striker returns to England by sealing a switch to the Etihad.
