Marcos Alonso is reportedly eager to move back to Spain amid interest from Atletico Madrid, although Chelsea are likely to knock back any bids that come their way.
Chelsea have a transfer ban to contend with and are thought to not be prepared to entertain any offers from other clubs for their current players. However, Goal are reporting of a possible interest from Atletico Madrid in full-back Marcos Alonso as the Spanish club look for reinforcements to shore up their backline.
Diego Simeone is set to endure one of his most challenging summers as he looks to bolster a depleted defence. The Colchoneros have seen experienced stars and key components leave at the end of the season, with Juanfran, Diego Godin and Lucas Hernandez all departing. Filipe Luis too, could be the next in line for a departure with Barcelona circling around for the Brazilian’s signature.
Among those who have left, the €80 million sale of Hernandez to Bayern Munich was able to generate significant funds. This money could be further used by Atletico to shore up their backline, with Simeone eyeing a move for Chelsea full-back Alonso this summer. A deal, however, could be tricky considering Chelsea have problems with the transfer ban kicking in.
The Blues might have sanctioned a sale otherwise, but with their hands tied in the market, they will be unable to make any dealings in the window. Even though Alonso failed to nail down a starting spot this past season, Chelsea would want to keep hold of their key players for the upcoming season. Having already sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, no other departures are planned.
Simeone has identified Alonso as the viable option to fill the void left by Hernandez’s departure as well as Filipe Luis’ forthcoming exit. Alonso did not exactly star in the last season under Maurizio Sarri, losing his spot to Emerson Palmieri in the second half of the campaign. But, with the Chelsea boss looking set to join Juventus, things could change for the Spaniard at Stamford Bridge.
Sarri preferred Emerson for the Europa League final in place of Alonso as well, and it has all meant that the former Real Madrid man has been considering the future at the club. The full-back is said to prefer a move back to Spain, but the interest could possibly only stem from Atletico Madrid.
Alonso has a long contract with Chelsea worth £150,000 per week that lasts until the summer of 2023. For a player with four years left on his deal, Chelsea will surely demand big money if they were to make peace with the idea of selling him.
A move to Atletico Madrid might resurrect Marcos Alonso’s flailing career in London and also help Diego Simeone reinforce his backline. The Spaniard could be a good signing for Los Rojiblancos, but given the circumstances, the Madrid club should consider other options in the market and not be left hanging by a thread, especially with Chelsea determined to keep hold of him.
