Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly received a boost in their hunt for USMNT star Christian Pulisic, as Borussia Dortmund open doors for a sale.
As per a report from the Mirror, Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Manchester United have been given a green light to pursue the signing of Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic in the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old attacker is one of the most highly-rated young players across Europe and has been a mainstay at Dortmund ever since he burst on to the scenes under Thomas Tuchel a couple of years ago.
However, the American starlet has lost his place in the starting XI to English wonderkid Jadon Sancho in the 2018-19 campaign under new boss Lucien Favre. Pulisic hasn’t started a single Bundesliga game for the leaders since September and has chipped in with 3 goals and 4 assists from 16 matches across all competitions thus far.
Pulisic is set to enter the final eighteen months of his current contract with the German giants and is believed to have no intentions of signing a new deal, owing to his lack of regular footballing action. The 20-year-old’s situation had put a number of clubs on high alert over a summer move, but now it has emerged that Dortmund would be open to a sale in January, for the right price.
Chelsea have been hot on the tails of the American international, as manager Maurizio Sarri seeks reinforcements in the wide areas, owing to the question marks over the future of superstar Eden Hazard, coupled with the fact that both Willian and Pedro are over 30 years of age.
Manchester United too have been touted as a potential destination for the supremely talented youngster, with Jose Mourinho keen on bolstering his options in the wide areas. The lack of a natural right-sided winger has been a troublesome issue for the Red Devils for a while now, and the Portuguese boss is hoping to address that with the capture of Pulisic.
Chelsea and Manchester United aren’t the only clubs interested though, with arch rivals Liverpool also in the hunt, given that the Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of Pulisic’s abilities. Reigning German champions Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs, as they look to replace superstar Arjen Robben, who will be leaving at the end of the season.
Dortmund rate Pulisic at £70 million, but an offer in excess of £50 million should be enough to convince the Bundesliga leaders to part with their prized asset in the January transfer window.
It seems all but certain that the 20-year-old Pulisic is headed for an exit from Borussia Dortmund either in January or at the end of the season. His potential availability is set to spark a major bidding war among clubs. It remains to be seen who will come out on top in the race to sign the USMNT international.
