Manchester United have been tipped to secure the services of Chelsea legend John Terry, who is a free agent after his Aston Villa departure
Adrian Durham, while speaking on his Drivetime show on talkSPORT, has claimed that John Terry could be the solution to Manchester United’s central defensive woes. Durham has added that the Red Devils should delve into the free agent market to sign the Chelsea legend, who last played for Aston Villa.
Terry is one of those rare players who have managed to earn the tag of a living legend at Chelsea, having enjoyed a near two-decade senior career at Stamford Bridge. With a staggering 17 trophies and a number of other individual honours during his time with the Blues, the 37-year-old is one of the best ever players to play for the club, if not the best.
But, Terry’s storied Chelsea career came to an end in the summer of 2017, when his contract ran out. He subsequently joined Aston Villa, where was promptly made the club captain and enjoyed a productive campaign at Villa Park. However, the veteran defender is a free agent again after ending his stint at Villa, and in shocking circumstances, Manchester United have been tipped as his next destination.
Adrian Durham, presenter at talkSPORT, has claimed that Terry is exactly what Manchester United are looking for, and has gone on to state that the Chelsea legend should be snapped up by the Red Devils.
“All Manchester United can go with is free agents, John Terry is exactly that so why wouldn’t Manchester United go for John Terry? He is better than Rojo, of course he is! John Terry would get into the Manchester United team ahead of Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Lindelof.”
“Think of the crisis they have got at the back, think about how well Jose Mourinho knows John Terry. He is a free agent, it could happen. If Jose Mourinho has thought about it, I can see that happening.”
Indeed, it is true that Terry has been one of the best defenders ever seen in English football history, with the player playing some of his best football under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho. But, one must also acknowledge that he is not the formidable figure he once was at his pomp at Chelsea.
And so, even though Manchester United are in desperate need of a top class centre-back, Terry might not be able to shore up the backline all that well. One thing that might go in the Chelsea legend’s favour though, is his undeniable leadership abilities, which is something that Mourinho has been yearning for.
However, landing Terry is all but impossible for Manchester United, with the 37-year-old unlikely to join a Premier League club, let alone one that is one of Chelsea’s major rivals. For now, this looks like a deal that might not happen, especially with the Red Devils not forthcoming with their interest.
