AS Roma are ready to make a shock move for veteran Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech as they search for a no.1 to replace the departed Alisson Becker.
AS Roma are ready to re-invest some of the cash they received for Alisson Becker, who joined Liverpool in a deal that broke the world record for a goalkeeper, and are looking to sign an experienced replacement for the Brazilian. The Sun report that ‘keeper could be Arsenal’s veteran star, Petr Cech.
While firstly Cech may not cost much, Roma are more inclined towards the experience he could bring to their young squad, who they fear might falter at the back without the presence of someone experienced. For that purpose alone, Cech fits the bill nicely, as there is belief that there are still some years left before the veteran keeper hangs up his gloves.
Cech’s position as Arsenal’s first choice keeper is under serious threat after the North London side signed Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen in a £22 million deal earlier in the transfer window. With a disappointing last season for Arsenal, where the defence were blamed for most things, Cech was in the thick of criticism following some weak performances.
That factor has not deterred Roma from making a move for the veteran ex-Chelsea keeper following the sale of Alisson a few days ago to Liverpool. Cech, on the other hand, is also a subject of reported interest from former side Chelsea, as they are coming to terms with the possible departure of Thibaut Courtois.
Since the past few days, Cech has been in the news as there has been further interest in the experienced keeper. Serie A side Napoli were also believed to be interested in bringing the former Czech International to San Paolo, but the Czech has reportedly rejected their advances to remain with the Gunners.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are also showing interest in signing another keeper in Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach as Unai Emery seems hell-bent to drastically changing his keeper options. If this move for Sommer is to materialise, then it could surely spell the end for Cech and his Arsenal career.
So far, his agent has insisted the 36-year-old is entirely focused on the season with Arsenal, but a change in scenario, along with a reasonable offer from Roma could change things entirely. Cech to Roma, would, however, make complete sense for all parties concerned, and pave the way for the veteran to prolong his career in a different league.
