Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, who is also a summer target for Chelsea.
According to a report by The Independent, Manchester United have reignited their interest in signing Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich striker is also the subject of interest from Chelsea, who are keen on signing a world class striker in the summer transfer window.
Lewandowski has long been regarded as one of the best strikers in the world – a status that has only solidified over his four-year stint at Bayern Munich. Bundesliga top scorer in two of these campaigns, the Polish striker has a staggering record 151 goals and 35 assists in 195 appearances with Die Roten.
But, after four illustrious campaigns with Bayern Munich, Lewandowski is reportedly ready for a new challenge, which has piqued the interest of several big name clubs across Europe. Real Madrid were heavy favourites to sign him for a long time. But, his next destination appears to be England, with Chelsea and Manchester United interested.
At Chelsea, the need for a new striker has become urgent since the turn of the year. Alvaro Morata was signed last summer as a long-term striking solution. But, the Spaniard endured a difficult second half of the 2017-18 season, and is not believed in Maurizio Sarri’s plans for the upcoming campaign.
Beyond Morata, the likes of Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi are options. But, the duo are considered to be backup options at best. Lewandowski is thus, a viable target for Chelsea this summer. But, the Blues’ pursuit of the 29-year-old has become complicated, with Manchester United rekindling their interest in him.
Lewandowski is a player who has a huge admirer in Jose Mourinho. But, the Manchester United manager already has a prolific striker in Romelu Lukaku, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez possible options as well.
Mourinho has been unhappy with the output of Rashford and Martial at times. The manager also seems to be frustrated by Manchester United’s quiet display in the transfer market in recent weeks. But, Lewandowski’s capture still makes little sense despite his experience and stature, as his arrival would likely either see the Pole and Lukaku share game time, or one being the first-choice over the other.
If Lewandowski does arrive at Old Trafford though, Mourinho will have another prolific forward in his squad. But, it is hard to see him sign a top class striker for the second successive summer window. Chelsea, on the other hand, could be primed to make a move for Lewandowski, who would be a valuable addition at Stamford Bridge.
Bayern Munich are open to selling the player as well. But, the biggest obstacle in Chelsea’s bid to sign the player is the unavailability of Champions League football. It will also be interesting to see if Manchester United make a concrete bid for Lewandowski, who certainly looks to be on the move this summer.
