Inter Milan have joined Manchester United in the hunt for Corinthians left-back Guilherme Arana
According to Fox Sports Brazil (h/t Goal.com), Serie A giants Inter Milan have entered the fray to lure Corinthian’s highly-touted youth prospect Guilherme Arana. The 19-year-old is considered to be one of the brightest talents to graduate from the club’s academy.
As reported earlier, Manchester United are also keen on signing the Brazilian, given their dilemma at left-back. Luke Shaw has been the number one option this season, but he has been on the receiving end of some public criticism by the manager for his unwillingness to play through pain.
Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind have often been used as makeshift left-backs, but they are better suited to play on the left side of a defensive two. Ashley Young, a winger by trade, has often neglected his defensive duties when tasked to play as a left-back.At 19, Arana will be a valuable acquisition, but now Jose Mourinho will have to fend off interest from Inter if he is to get his man.
Arana’s contract is forty percent owned by the club and Elenko Sports have rights over the remaining 60 percent. With Corinthians suffering form monetary issues, they might be willing to cash-in on an offer.
The 19-year-old was key in Corinthians’ quest for the Brasilerao last term. Despite it being his first season with the senior team, Arana showed great maturity to help the Brazilian side. He has also made few appearances for the Brazil under-20s, and has performed beyond expectations on the international stage as well.
Inter’s interest in the left-back has been confirmed by the player’s agent, but Manchester United still appear to be holding the upper hand in the race to sign the 19-year-old. Thus, the next few weeks will be key in deciding whether the defender makes a move to Europe or continues his progress in his native Brazil.
