Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has reportedly said that he shall leave the club only for Real Madrid.
Aubameyang has told ZDF, according to FourFourTwo, that he would only consider a move away from the Bundesliga runners-up for Real Madrid. The striker has been recently linked with Los Blancos’ rivals Atletico Madrid along with Premier League duo of Manchester United and Manchester City.
Manchester United have since gone on to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic and cooled their interest in the forward while Atletico Madrid have been reported to be eyeing a reunion with Chelsea forward Diego Costa. Manchester City were rumoured to be close to signing Aubameyang but this revelation will put a dent in their hopes of a transfer.
Aubameyang was asked about the possibility of leaving the Signal-Iduna Park by ZDF to which he clearly said,“ This year, no. But the only club I would leave Dortmund for are Real Madrid. If they don’t come calling, I don’t leave.”
The striker reiterated that while Real Madrid is his main goal in the future, there has been contact with the club about a move and his current focus lies with Borussia Dortmund.
“Real Madrid is my main goal but at the moment I like it in Dortmund. If there is a chance to go to Madrid, I will say immediately yes – but at the moment there is no contact,” Aubameyang told ZDF.
The striker was in devastating form for the club last season chalking up 25 goals to his name in 31 league appearances. Aubameyang was the highest goalscorer for his club and behind only to Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski, in the entire league (stats via whoscored).
The Gabon international was deadlier in the Europa League with a return of 8 goals in his 10 matches and finished the European campaign as the joint third-highest goalscorer despite Dortmund bowing out in the Quarter Finals of the tournament (stats via whoscored).
It is no wonder that the likes of Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester City were interested in the striker after such dazzling performances for Borussia Dortmund. Manchester City and Atletico Madrid reportedly remain the only parties interested but could be forced to look elsewhere with Aubameyang clearly announcing his intentions.
