With Jose Mourinho reportedly set to replace Louis van Gaal as the manager of Manchester United next season, the Portuguese coach seems to have been promised the signing of Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes.
Mourinho has been largely tipped to take over from Van Gaal next season, as the Dutchman has not been performing as per expectations. He is even struggling to take Manchester United into the top four spots, something that is generally considered a given for the club.
Also, Van Gaal’s style of play has been heavily criticised, with Manchester United having taken the second lowest number of shots in the Premier League so far.
Although Mourinho’s prospective move has not been confirmed yet, there have always been rumours linking him to Manchester United, and now his first transfer target seems to have been revealed. Mourinho is said to be impressed with the progress that Gomes has made at Valencia, and has been reassured that he will be given a chance to sign the 22-year-old in the summer.
Jorge Mendes, who is the agent of both the player and the manager, is acting as the intermediary between the two parties, and an offer in the region of £35 million might convince Los Che to sell, according to Calciomercato.
Manchester United need inspiration in midfield
The Red Devils have been in the need of some impetus in the creative and the attacking sections of their starting XI, and the signing of Gomes could solve some of those problems. Plying his trade in the middle of the park at Valencia, Gomes has scored four goals and as many assists so far this season.
Ander Herrera, who has failed to impress so far at Manchester United, could face some competition for his place in the lineup, if this move happens. However, Manchester United might have to splash the cash for the Portuguese midfielder, as Juventus are also said to be trying to sign him.
