Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted that he could make a “surprise” striker signing despite intentions to retain services of Javier Hernandez.
Manchester United were touted to be in the market for a forward following the departure of Robin van Persie and Falcao.
Wayne Rooney and youngster James Wilson were the only recognised forwards on the pitch as United kicked off their pre-season with a 1-0 win over America in the International Champions Cup in Seattle on Friday.
There May Be A Suprise
The club have been linked with moves for PSG striker Edinson Cavani and Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski . and Van Gaal insists while he is not concerned about Manchester United’s striker situation, he could add a forward to their ranks before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
“We have Rooney, he can play in striker’s position, and all media had written he should play there so I listen and now you put this question so I don’t know what you want,” the Dutchman told reporters.
“Also [Javier Hernandez] and maybe Wilson and maybe there comes a surprise. It’s a process. I’m not worried about that position.”
Hernandez Gets A New Lease Of Life
Striker Hernandez is still owned by Manchester United despite spending the 2014-15 season on loan at Real Madrid and van Gaal has decided to hand an opportunity to the Mexican to resurrect his United career folowing the exits of Van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
“Hernandez is coming [to the United States] on July 25,” Van Gaal added. “He can prove himself and now Falcao and Van Persie are gone so his chances are better now.”
Expect A Suprise?
Van Gaal had admitted earlier on that Manchester United will look to sign two new players in the transfer market. One is widely touted to be a center back, a position the club is looking to fill with Sergio Ramos or Nicolas Otamendi.
The other position that the club could fill in could be goalkeeper rathar than forward. Victor Valdes is set to depart the club as confirmed by van Gaal and the club would need to sign a goalkeeper.
Manchester United have Rooney as the first choice forward as well as Javier Hernandez now. The manager also confirmed earlier than Depay will play in the central role at the club with young James Wilson also ready to fill the striker void in cup competitions.
This leaves little room for any other striker to come in, especially given the manager expects big things from Rooney and Depay
