Liverpool have entered the race to sign 15-year-old German wonderkid Niko Ilicevic from Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.
The teenager attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in European football as per TEAMtalk.
The 15-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise through Frankfurt’s academy and is now regarded as one of Germany’s most exciting young prospects. He turns 16 later this month, at which point his current youth agreement is expected to convert into a professional contract running until 2029. Liverpool are understood to have been monitoring Ilicevic’s development for some time, although their interest remains at the scouting stage rather than representing an imminent bid.
The Reds face formidable competition as Barcelona and Real Madrid are both keeping tabs on the Germany youth international, while Manchester City, AC Milan and Inter Milan are also following his progress. Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle have been mentioned among the wider group of admirers, while Bournemouth have also emerged as another English club monitoring the teenager.
Barcelona and Real Madrid set to battle it out
The left-footed midfielder can operate in several attacking positions and has already been trusted against older age groups at Frankfurt. The Bundesliga side are understandably keen to keep control of his development and the Bundesliga club believe Ilicevic could eventually be introduced to senior football and want that pathway to begin in Germany rather than elsewhere. That could make negotiations difficult for Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Frankfurt have already presented the youngster with a development plan designed to convince him that staying at the club represents the best route for his career. No formal negotiations have begun, but that could change once he turns 16.
Frankfurt remain keen to retain Ilicevic
Liverpool’s interest fits their increasingly familiar recruitment strategy of identifying elite young talent before their reputation and transfer value explode. However, signing a player of Ilicevic’s age from Germany would present significant complications, while Frankfurt have little financial reason to rush into a sale. The immediate battle may therefore be less about transfer fees and more about convincing the player where his development should continue.
The Reds’ interest is hardly surprising and Ilicevic looks like exactly the kind of player Europe’s biggest clubs want to identify before he becomes a household name. For a teenager dreaming of reaching the highest level, the attraction of joining one of Europe’s most prestigious academies will be enormous. Liverpool will need to offer something more convincing than simply the promise of a big club given that Barcelona and Real Madrid are also keen.
Frankfurt’s position is also worth emphasising as the Bundesliga provides an excellent pathway for young players, and the club clearly believe Iličević is close enough to senior football to make that route worthwhile.
Liverpool should continue monitoring the situation rather than rushing into a battle they may not yet need to fight. If Ilicevic continues producing goals and assists against older players, however, the competition will only intensify. For now, Frankfurt hold the strongest hand but with a host of other European heavyweights watching, keeping a 15-year-old wonderkid’s head turned toward home could become increasingly difficult.
