Liverpool will have to break the bank to sign Real Madrid midfield mainstay Aurelien Tchouameni.
Liverpool have long admired Aurelien Tchouameni, though signing him in the near future will require breaking the bank. Real Madrid are reluctant to part with the French international despite the Reds’ sustained interest.
According to a report by Football Insider, Tchouameni remains a target for Liverpool as they continue to assess their midfield options following a mixed start to the season. However, Los Blancos have little interest in allowing him to leave and are expected to demand a huge fee if the Premier League club make a serious approach.
Tchouameni has established himself as an important part of Jose Mourinho’s plans at the Bernabeu. The Merseyside club’s pursuit became even more difficult after the midfielder signed a new contract, further strengthening the Spanish club’s position.
The Frenchman has made 199 appearances for the Merengues, contributing 15 goals since joining from AS Monaco back in 2022. His ability to operate as a holding midfielder or centre-back has made him an asset and a utility player for Real Madrid.
The player’s defensive awareness and ability to win possession provide protection for the back four, while his capacity to move into defence gives the Spanish club a tactical option when injuries or tactical changes demand it.
Why Liverpool would want to sign Tchouameni
The aforementioned qualities could make him particularly valuable to Liverpool. The Reds have been looking for another reliable option at number six, with Ryan Gravenberch currently anchoring the midfield. Adding another specialist in the position would provide greater competition and potentially allow Gravenberch to play further forward.
Liverpool’s interest could also be revived following Julian Ward’s return as sporting director. Ward previously attempted to bring Tchouameni to Anfield during his first spell at the club, but the midfielder ultimately chose Real Madrid.
The renewed interest therefore has a familiar connection, although Liverpool face a much tougher task this time around. The Reds have shown a willingness to spend heavily in recent transfer windows.
However, they may adopt a more cautious approach in January as they look to reduce their overall spending. Any move for Tchouameni would demand a substantial offer, particularly given his new contract and importance in the Mourinho setup.
