Leeds United line up €25 million move for Andrei Ratiu

Leeds United are preparing to step up their interest in Rayo Vallecano right-back Andrei Ratiu as Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his defensive options before the transfer window closes.

According to Fichajes, the Romania international has been monitored by several Premier League clubs in recent months, but Leeds United are now reportedly considering triggering his €25 million release clause to avoid a prolonged negotiation with Rayo. Ratiu has established himself as one of La Liga’s more reliable attacking full-backs since arriving in Vallecas in 2023 and remains under contract until 2030.

Leeds are understood to be willing to meet the €25 million figure written into Ratiu’s contract. Doing so would effectively remove Rayo Vallecano’s ability to negotiate for a higher transfer fee, leaving the next major steps centred around the player’s willingness to move and the agreement of personal terms.

Liverpool and Newcastle United threaten move

Liverpool and Newcastle United have also been linked with Ratiu previously, with his relatively accessible release clause making him an attractive option for Premier League clubs. The 28-year-old’s attacking output has also added to his appeal.

He registered four assists and created 43 chances last season while maintaining a regular role on the right side of Rayo’s defence. His international experience with Romania further strengthens his profile as a player capable of making an immediate impact rather than requiring a long development period.

Rayo Vallecano face losing important defender

Rayo Vallecano are in a strong contractual position in theory, with Ratiu tied down until 2030. However, the fixed release clause significantly limits their control over the situation. The Spanish club acquired full ownership of the defender’s economic rights in 2025, meaning a €25 million departure would represent a substantial financial return.

If Leeds formally deposit the full amount, Rayo would be unable to demand more and the decision would effectively move into Ratiu’s hands. Ratiu looks like a sensible target for Leeds because the financial terms are unusually clear. At €25 million, they would be signing an experienced La Liga and international defender with proven attacking output and little uncertainty over the asking price.

The bigger question is whether Leeds are prepared to commit the full clause and whether Ratiu sees Elland Road as the right next step. If both answers are yes, this could become a relatively straightforward deal compared with many late-window negotiations.
