Tottenham Hotspur leading the race to sign Marcos Senesi

Tottenham are leading the race for Marcos Senesi ahead of his Bosman departure from Bournemouth, with relegation a big stumbling block.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Marcos Senesi in the summer on a Bosman deal. The move is subject to Spurs avoiding relegation, something that could allow other suitors to make their offers for the soon-to-be former Bournemouth defender.

Tottenham are battling a variety of problems heading into the summer, with their relegation battle taking centre-stage. Spurs managed to bring Roberto De Zerbi in recently to become their new manager in a bid to avoid the drop, but the Italian suffered his first defeat last weekend, which saw the team enter the bottom three for the first time since 2009.

Spurs are also anticipating a host of key departures in the summer should they suffer relegation, while the prospect of playing in the Championship is also hampering their plans in the transfer window. As per David Ornstein, Tottenham are now in the lead for defender Marcos Senesi, having held advanced talks for the Bournemouth star.

The Argentine defender is set to leave Bournemouth on a free transfer, and as things stand, Spurs are the favourites to sign him. However, the move will depend on their ability to avoid relegation from the Premier League, which could open the floor for other suitors.

Tottenham are expecting some departures, especially from key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Teams like Bayern Munich and Barcelona are keen on the latter, while the former could be headed to Spain. As for Senesi, he is a left-footed defender, which does make him the probable replacement for the Dutchman.

Which clubs are chasing Marcos Senesi?

There’s a realistic chance that Senesi might not join Tottenham due to their ongoing battle against relegation, but he will have a host of suitors in the background if a move falls through. He has reportedly rejected Juventus for a variety of reasons, centred around the salary package offered by the Turin giants, which might be an area where Spurs have offered a relatively higher salary.

Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in Senesi, which shows the Argentine has plenty of suitors. For now, Spurs are in advanced talks for the 28-year-old South American defender, and they will hope to avoid relegation and bring the Argentine to north London.
