Manchester United view Maghnes Akliouche as backup target

Manchester United will not prioritise signing 24-year-old French international Maghnes Akliouche from Ligue 1 club AS Monaco in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, AS Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche is the subject of interest from Manchester United. However, the Red Devils are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a left-sided attacker ahead of the 2026/27 season. So, the 24-year-old has become a contingency option for the Premier League club.

While the English heavyweights retain an interest in the Frenchman, they are “set to prioritise a left-winger before someone who plays on the right”. So, Akliouche is no longer a priority target for Manchester United, even though they have placed him on their wishlist.

Maghnes Akliouche and his rising stock

Maghnes Akliouche has established himself as one of the best young prospects in Ligue 1 since breaking into the first-team squad at AS Monaco. Born in Tremblay-en-France, the 24-year-old spent his formative years in France and graduated from the youth division at AS Monaco. The youngster has not looked back since enjoying his breakthrough in the 2023/24 campaign.

Akliouche has been solid this season, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 38 outings in all competitions thus far. Meanwhile, the French playmaker’s exploits for AS Monaco have helped him break into his national side while capturing the attention of high-profile Premier League clubs. Recent reports have heavily linked him with Manchester United.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Maghnes Akliouche has been on Manchester United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest, albeit as a backup target, makes sense, as the Red Devils are mulling over continuing to revamp their offensive unit to once again become serial winners for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

However, Manchester United’s decision not to consider the 24-year-old Frenchman as a priority target is understandable. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo have been impressive in their outings on the right flank, and the Premier League giants need a player who can bolster Michael Carrick’s options on the left wing.

So, Manchester United will prioritise signing Morgan Rogers, with recent reports suggesting the Aston Villa playmaker has Michael Carrick’s backing. However, that will not mean that Akliouche will not even be a backup option for United, and he can rise in the pecking order as the club’s transfer plans evolve.
