Real Madrid have reportedly received a massive boost in their pursuit of 25-year-old Chelsea midfield mainstay Enzo Fernandez.
According to a report from AS, Enzo Fernandez could end up leaving Chelsea this summer if they fail to secure a spot in the Champions League. His future has already been up in the air amidst interest from Real Madrid, and his recent comments certainly didn’t help.
Following comments about his desire to live in Madrid, the Chelsea skipper was handed a two-game ban by the club. He missed their FA Cup quarter-final win over Port Vale. Post that fixture, Fernandez and his agent, Javier Pastore, held talks with the London club.
During a three-way conversation, the Argentine international apologised and peace was restored. While things have been taken care of, Liam Rosenior has already confirmed that his ban will not be lifted. He will still miss the game against Manchester City.
However, the skipper is expected to be back in action post that. The Blues certainly need him in their team, as they look to secure a Champions League spot and go all the way in the FA Cup. Meanwhile, the player wants to finish the season on a high, as he wants to head to the World Cup in the best possible form and also ensure that interest in his services remains intact.
Real Madrid’s chances of signing Fernandez boosted
Real Madrid, who have been extensively linked with the 25-year-old, retain interest in his services. They are closely monitoring the Argentine star, who has 18 goal contributions in his 46 outings this term.
While he prefers playing as a central midfielder, he is capable enough to take up any role in the centre of the park. Los Blancos are keen on his signature as they look for someone who can help them better control the tempo of the game.
Fernandez has exceptional defensive awareness, and he can play the role of a deep-lying playmaker. In simple terms, he is a perfect fit to reinforce the Madrid midfield, which has been all over the place this season.
While the 25-year-old has made peace with the Blues for now, and his contract there runs until 2032, he could still be on the move in the summer. The London club are sixth in the Premier League. They are one point behind 5th-placed Liverpool and are gearing up for an intense battle for a UCL spot.
If they fail to secure a spot in Europe’s premier competition, it could lead to his departure. The Blues will be forced to put him up for sale. As a result, they hope regular first-team action will not only keep his value intact but also help them fetch the best possible price.
