Chelsea are keeping tabs on Darwin Nunez’s situation amid speculation surrounding his Al-Hilal future, as a move could be considered.
According to Team Talk, Darwin Nunez is one of the names under consideration at Chelsea, with the club anticipating a new striker signing in the summer. The Uruguayan’s time at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal has not gone to plan, as he is attracting interest from many clubs apart from the Blues.
Darwin Nunez won the Premier League title with Liverpool last season, but came under heavy criticism for most of his performances during the campaign. The Merseysiders eventually accepted an offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal in the summer to sell the Uruguayan, as they sought two new centre-forwards in Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
Things have not gone to plan for the 26-year-old Premier League-winning attacker in the Saudi Pro League, despite his impressive performances until January. Al-Hilal took a massive market opportunity within the Saudi Pro League to sign superstar Karim Benzema after his contract standoff at Al-Ittihad.
The move for the Frenchman saw Al-Hilal de-register Nunez from the league squad, and his appearances have been sporadic since, which has led to speculation over a return to England or Europe, where a host of teams are showing interest, including Newcastle United and Tottenham, with Nunez reportedly willing to take a significant pay cut to leave Al-Hilal.
Tottenham are interested, but any summer activity for Nunez or other targets will depend on their ability to stay in the Premier League. Newcastle United had considered a move for the attacker, given how their summer striker signings have underwhelmed. Eddie Howe is not particularly pushing for the Uruguayan, they could yet spring a surprise with an interest around the summer window.
Chelsea in Darwin Nunez move?
Chelsea have also shown an interest in Nunez, and they have now added the 26-year-old Premier League-winning attacker to their list of striker targets. There were links to Samu Omorodion before his serious knee injury, while PSG’s Goncalo Ramos has also been mentioned.
Chelsea have plans to make adjustments to their forward line in the summer, with Liam Delap not able to cement a place in the team. Hence, he could potentially depart, with Chelsea looking into the market for players with a similar profile, meaning Nunez might fit the bill, as long as he accepts a wage package that fits into the club’s structure.
